What Is An Alnico Magnet and What Is It Utilized For?

What Is Alnico?

Alnico is a combination of Al (aluminum), Ni (nickel) and Co (cobalt).

Exactly How Is Alnico Made?

Alnico magnets are manufactured by casting or sintering process.

  • The manufacturing method of cast magnets is to pour molten metal alloy into a mold, and then further process it through various thermal cycles. The final product is a magnet with a dark gray appearance and a rough surface, but the machined magnet surface has a shiny appearance.
  • Sintered magnets are produced by condensing fine alnico powder in a press, and afterwards sintering the compacted powder into a strong magnet.

Although eclipsed by rare earth magnets and largely replaced by rare earth magnets, Alnico still outperforms its successors under certain circumstances, so it is still used in many applications that require high operating temperatures.
