Amorphous Motor Stator

Amorphous motor stator refers to a motor technology that uses amorphous soft magnetic alloys instead of traditional silicon steel sheets, representing a key direction in motor technological advancement.

Definition of Amorphous Materials

When metal is melted, its internal atoms are in an active state. As the metal begins to cool, the atoms gradually arrange themselves in an orderly manner according to certain crystalline laws, forming crystals. However, if the cooling process is rapid, the atoms do not have time to rearrange and become solidified, resulting in the formation of amorphous structures.

Amorphous alloys are metallic alloys with an amorphous atomic structure. The preparation of amorphous alloys employs a rapid solidification process, with the thickness of the amorphous strips generally controlled between 0.02 and 0.03 mm.

Advantages of Amorphous Motor Stators

| Low Losses: Amorphous alloys have high resistivity, and their stator laminations are extremely thin, significantly suppressing eddy current losses during high-frequency operation. The disordered atomic structure of amorphous alloys has no grain boundaries, resulting in very low coercivity and minimal hysteresis loss. Therefore, the overall iron loss is much smaller compared to traditional silicon steel sheets.

| High Power Density and High Torque Density: The use of amorphous materials enables the motor to achieve higher power and torque output in the same size, or at a smaller size and weight, for the same power and torque requirements. This helps downsize and lighten the motor, meeting the strict space and weight requirements of applications such as new energy vehicles and drones.

Advantages of Amorphous Motor Stators

| Good High-Frequency Performance: Under high-frequency conditions, amorphous materials exhibit high magnetic permeability and low loss, making them well-suited for high-frequency motor operations. This reduces high-frequency iron losses and improves motor efficiency and performance at high speeds, thereby supporting the development of ultra-high-speed motors.

Disadvantages of Amorphous Motor Stators

| Processing Challenges: Unlike traditional silicon steel sheets, amorphous alloy materials are more brittle and can be easily damaged during processing and transport. This brittleness makes it difficult to create laminations following traditional manufacturing processes. Special machining techniques such as laser cutting, wire cutting, or complex modular splicing need to be employed, which results in lower processing efficiency.

| Cost: The raw material costs for amorphous strips are relatively high, and the costs of supporting processing equipment (such as laser cutters and precision pressing devices) and specialized processes are also high, leading to significantly higher overall manufacturing costs for amorphous motor stators compared to traditional silicon steel stators.

| Heat Dissipation: Although the absolute iron losses of amorphous alloys are low, under ultra-high-speed and high-frequency conditions, iron losses can still increase exponentially, leading to overheating of the stator core. Moreover, processing of amorphous strips can sometimes result in burrs or edge deterioration, causing local magnetic field distortions and creating localized eddy current hotspots.

Applications of Amorphous Motor Stators

Due to higher material costs, the benefits of amorphous motor stators are limited in low-speed applications, so their use is primarily concentrated in high-end, high-speed scenarios.

| New Energy Vehicles: Amorphous stators can significantly reduce iron losses during high-speed operations, enhance motor efficiency, lower overall vehicle energy consumption, and extend range. For example, they are used in range-extending generators for new energy vehicles, leveraging the high-frequency, low-loss characteristics of amorphous materials to achieve lightweight benefits.

| Industrial Automation: Since amorphous stators meet the requirements for low losses and low temperature rise at high speeds, they improve processing efficiency. Thus, their applications in industrial automation are mainly found in high-speed spindle motors and high-speed machining tools.
