Applications of samarium cobalt magnets are the main topic of this article. Belonging to the rare earth permanent magnets. Samarium cobalt magnets were the first magnetic materials used commercially and widely.
Types of Samarium Cobalt Magnets
There are two types of samarium cobalt magnets: Sm1Co5 and Sm2Co17, commonly called 1:5 type and 2:17 type.
| The 1:5 type has a maximum magnetic energy product ranging from 15 to 24 MGOe and a maximum operating temperature of 250 degrees Celsius.
| The 2:17 type has a maximum magnetic energy product range between 22 to 32 MGOe and can operate at temperatures up to 350 degrees Celsius.
Grades of Samarium Cobalt Magnets
For the 1:5 type, the grades include: SmCo16, SmCo18, SmCo20, SmCo22, etc.
For the 2:17 type, the grades include: SmCo24, SmCo26, SmCo28, etc.

The numbers 16, 18, 20, etc., indicate the typical values of the maximum magnetic energy product. Even if the grades are the same, there may be differences in remanence and coercivity among products from different manufacturers, so users should rely on the specifications provided by suppliers when making purchases.

| Calculation of Theoretical Values of Br and Hcj at High Temperature | The temperature coefficients of remanence Br and intrinsic coercivity Hcj are measured at 20°C to 150°C, only for reference. Theoretical calculation formula (T1 = room temperature (usually 20°C), T2 = high temperature): Br@T2 = Br@T1-[(T2-T1)*α]Br[Br@T1] Hcj@T2 = Hcj@T1-[(T2-T1)*β]Hcj[β]Hcj@T1] Taking YXG-28H, Br=1.03T, Hcj=1990Kd/m as an example, the theoretical value at 150°C is calculated as follows: Br@150°C=1.03-[(150-20)*0.0358*1.03]=0.9831T Hcj@150°C=1990-[(150-20)*0.2958*1990]=14727KA/m | ||||||||||
Remark:
There will be a slight test error during the magnetic performance test, but the error rate is less than 1%. Because the rough cast are not fully inspected, the performance indicators of all grades will have individual deviations.
Take the YXG-30 grade as an example. Br=10.8-11.0KGs of which there may be less than 5% of the performance range between 10.75-11.04KGs.
With the improvement of technology, the performance index may be changed, please refer to the latest version of NIGYC property sheet.
Applications of Samarium Cobalt Magnets
Excellent corrosion resistance, good magnetic energy product, and wide operating temperature range are the key factors of the applications of samarium cobalt magnets.
| Samarium cobalt magnets exhibit excellent corrosion resistance, maintaining their magnetic properties even in harsh environments such as salt fog and acid rain, benefiting the applications of samarium cobalt magnets and making them particularly suitable for applications in marine engineering and aerospace fields or in devices frequently exposed to corrosive environments.

For instance, in marine engineering, samarium cobalt magnets are used to manufacture underwater sensors and thrusters, which need to provide stable performance while being submerged in saltwater for extended periods. In aerospace, samarium cobalt magnets are utilized in aircraft navigation systems and satellite attitude control devices, applications that require materials to remain reliable in extreme environments.
| As a type of permanent magnet material, samarium cobalt magnets have superior performance compared to conventional ferrite magnets. They possess a higher magnetic energy product, meaning they can store more magnetic energy within a given volume. Additionally, their strong coercivity ensures that samarium cobalt magnets do not easily lose their magnetism, even under a strong reverse magnetic field, demonstrating excellent demagnetization resistance.

The high magnetic energy product and coercivity of samarium cobalt magnets together endow them with the ability to withstand strong magnetic fields, a necessary characteristic for many high-end applications. For example, in precision instruments, high-performance motors, and generators, this capability helps achieve more compact and efficient designs. In automotive safety systems and industrial automation, the applications of samarium cobalt magnets enhance the sensitivity and accuracy of sensors, enabling reliable operation in complex environments.
| Another key characteristic of samarium cobalt magnets is their wide operating temperature range. They maintain stable magnetism at both high and low temperatures, which is crucial for wider applications of Samarium Cobalt magnets.

The maximum operating temperature of samarium cobalt magnets can reach around 350°C, making them the preferred material for manufacturing high-temperature permanent magnet devices in automotive and industrial automation applications.
They can also retain their magnetism at temperatures below absolute zero (-273 degrees Celsius), resulting in widespread use in aerospace applications.
| Applications of samarium cobalt magnets are also in the clean energy sector, samarium cobalt magnets are extensively utilized. In the production of high-capacity lithium-ion batteries, they can improve the charge and discharge efficiency as well as cycle stability. Such batteries are widely used in power tools, smartphones, and other portable electronic devices, further promoting energy conservation and environmental protection.

In wind power generation, samarium cobalt magnets play a crucial role as well. Generators in wind turbines use samarium cobalt magnets to capture more energy in strong winds and efficiently convert it into electrical energy. This high-efficiency energy conversion The development of clean energy will improve the applications of samarium cobalt magnets in the future.
