Carbon-Based Magnets

Carbon-based magnets break through the limitations of traditional magnetic materials. Through the unique electronic structure and quantum effects of carbon, it achieves lightweight, flexible, and tunable magnetism, providing a new material foundation for next-generation electronic devices.

Definition of Carbon-Based Magnets

Carbon-based magnets are a class of quantum materials that use carbon as the primary framework and exhibit intrinsic magnetism (such as ferromagnetism, antiferromagnetism, and ferrimagnetism) through specific structural design or chemical modification. They break through the limitations of traditional magnetic materials (such as iron, cobalt, nickel, and rare earths).

Definition of Carbon-Based Magnets

Thanks to their weak spin-orbit coupling, long coherence times, tunable magnetism, and lightweight, flexible properties, they show enormous potential in fields such as spintronics.

Advantages of Carbon-Based Magnets

| Lightweight and flexible: Carbon-based materials have extremely low density, making magnets produced from them ultra-light, which offers significant advantages in weight-sensitive applications such as aerospace electronic devices. Moreover, carbon-based materials exhibit excellent flexibility and bendability, enabling them to conform to complex curved surfaces, making them an ideal material for flexible electronic devices.

| Environmentally friendly: Carbon is abundant, readily available, and does not rely on expensive rare-earth metals (such as neodymium and dysprosium) or heavy metals (such as cobalt and nickel), keeping costs low. In addition, the preparation process for carbon-based materials is relatively environmentally friendly, and the materials themselves are non-toxic, aligning with the requirements of green and sustainable development.

| Power consumption and integration: Carbon-based magnets often exhibit half-metallic or wide-bandgap semiconductor properties. Combined with their thin, lightweight nature and suitability for micro-/nano-fabrication, they are highly suitable for manufacturing low-power, highly integrated spintronic logic devices.

Limitations of Carbon-Based Magnets

| Magnetic strength: The magnetization and coercivity of carbon-based magnets are generally lower than those of traditional rare-earth permanent magnets (such as NdFeB) and metal permanent magnets, making it difficult to meet the demands of high-performance applications requiring high BHmax and high coercivity.

| Process and cost: The laboratory preparation process for carbon-based magnets is complex, with extremely high requirements for molecular structure, lattice topology, and defect control, making it difficult to achieve large-area, high-consistency mass production. Currently, the synthesis of carbon-based magnets mostly relies on complex chemical synthesis (such as cross-coupling reactions) or high-vacuum conditions, resulting in relatively high overall manufacturing costs.

Production Processes for Carbon-Based Magnets

| On-Surface Synthesis (On-Surface In-Situ Synthesis): Under ultra-high-vacuum conditions, metal single crystals are used as templates and catalysts, and external field stimulation induces precursor molecules to undergo chemical reactions on the substrate, constructing atomically precise nanostructures.

This method overcomes the limitations of stability and solubility in solution and allows the direct construction of intrinsic open-shell materials that cannot remain stable in conventional solutions. It can be used to precisely construct low-dimensional nanostructures, such as one-dimensional nanoribbons and two-dimensional networks.

| Pyrolysis-Derived Method (Thermal Decomposition): Precursors such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) or biomass are pyrolyzed at high temperatures, causing the metal elements to react with carbon to form carbon-based magnetic materials. This method is simple in process and low in cost, and can be used for large-scale preparation of carbon-based magnetic materials. However, the magnetism and structural controllability of the products are relatively poor. It is suitable for preparing carbon-based magnetic materials such as magnetic carbon nanotubes and magnetic activated carbon, especially for applications in environmental remediation and biosensing.

Potential Applications of Carbon-Based Magnets

| Electronics industry: Thanks to their lightweight, flexible, low-energy-consumption, and electrically controllable multi-spin-state switching properties, carbon-based magnetic materials are being used to develop new spintronic devices, such as spintronic logic devices and low-power spin chips.

| Food industry: Owing to their large specific surface area, high adsorption capacity, and ease of magnetic separation, carbon-based magnetic materials are widely used as adsorbents in magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) for the enrichment and purification of trace substances in food samples and industry.
