Carbon Sleeved Rotor: High Speed SPM Rotor Assembly

In the realm of high-speed permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), it is crucial to secure magnets against centrifugal forces. To achieve this, retention sleeves made from Titanium, Inconel, or 300 series stainless steel are frequently employed. However, when dealing with the highest tip speeds, the use of carbon-composite sleeves becomes imperative. For five years, Tengye has been at the forefront of carbon sleeved rotor solution, providing customized permanent magnet rotors with carbon fiber sleeves.
The retention of high-speed rotors against centrifugal forces is achieved by utilizing continuous fiber ultra-high-strength tubing made from carbon composites.
Advantages of Carbon Fiber Rotor Sleeve
Carbon fiber is a remarkable material renowned for its incredibly high strength-to-weight ratio, making it ideal for various applications like aerospace components, motorsports, and bicycle frames.
By replacing the traditional metallic sleeve with a carbon fiber composite, permanent magnet rotor assemblies become significantly lighter, resulting in lower rotational inertia and increased compressive pressure. Moreover, carbon fiber allows for a thinner air gap between the shaft assembly and stator, while also reducing self-load caused by centrifugal forces. Though some electrical losses persist due to carbon fiber’s axial conductivity, they are notably lower compared to the metallic sleeve it replaces.
