A Halbach array is a magnetic structure first discovered in 1979 by American scientist Klaus Halbach during experiments, which he gradually perfected into what is now known as the “Halbach Array”. Due to its excellent magnetic field distribution characteristics, the Halbach arrays have played a very important role in many equipment and industries.
The Concept of the Halbach Array

Halbach array is an ideal engineering structure of magnet arrangement, enhancing the magnetic field strength in a particular direction with minimal magnet usage, aimed at producing the strongest possible magnetic field.
Due to its excellent magnetic characteristics, the application of Halbach arrays has gradually expanded into various fields.
This array is composed entirely of rare earth permanent magnets. Arranging magnets with different magnetization directions, concentrates magnetic field lines on one side while reducing them on the opposite side, thus creating an ideal unidirectional magnetic field.
Technical Parameters for Reference

| No. | Grade | OD | ID | Depth | The field in the bore |

| TY835-60 | N45 | 220mm | 60mm | 75mm | 1 Tesla |

Advantages of the Halbach Array
| High Magnetic Field Strength: It significantly enhances the magnetic field strength in a specific direction, producing the strongest magnetic field with the least magnets. For example, the Halbach array in the motor application can improve the air gap magnetic flux density, boosting motor performance such as power density without increasing the use of permanent magnets.

| Good Magnetic Field Distribution and Uniformity: The magnetic field is evenly distributed within a circular path or a designated area, with minimal variation in strength, improving the stability of the magnetic field. This is particularly important for applications requiring high magnetic field uniformity.
| Unidirectional Magnetic Field Characteristics: The magnetic field is concentrated on one side, and the field on the other side is weak or nearly zero. This feature is advantageous for applications requiring specific magnetic field directions and distribution, such as in magnetic levitation technology, enabling one-sided levitation of objects.

| Efficient Space Utilization: The array structure effectively concentrates the magnetic field in a given space, reducing magnetic field diffusion in unnecessary directions, thus saving space. This is particularly important in space-limited applications, such as in miniaturized electronic devices or precision instruments.
| Multipolar Magnetic Fields: It can generate multipolar magnetic fields, allowing for more complex magnetic field configurations in certain applications, and offering greater flexibility and operability for special experimental or application needs.
| Energy Efficiency and Environmental Friendliness: The design typically uses materials with high energy conversion efficiency, and through proper design and optimization of the magnetic circuit, energy waste can be minimized.
Disadvantages of the Halbach Array
| Complex Manufacturing and Assembly: The precise arrangement of magnets requires meticulous design and processing to ensure accurate magnetization direction and position of each magnet. This increases manufacturing complexity and costs, especially for Halbach arrays with complex shapes or large sizes. For instance, adjacent magnets with different magnetization directions may require special molds or assembly techniques to ensure proper installation, and the strong repulsive forces between magnets during assembly can make the process challenging.
| Magnetization Difficulty: Ideally, the magnetization direction of the Halbach array’s permanent magnets continuously varies along the circumference of a ring-shaped magnet, which is difficult to achieve in practice. Typically, the ring is divided into geometric sectors, and each sector is magnetized in a specific direction to form the array, requiring advanced magnetization techniques and equipment.
| High Cost: On one hand, the complexity of manufacturing and assembly increases labor and equipment costs; on the other hand, high-performance Halbach arrays may require high-quality permanent magnetic materials, which are costly. Additionally, increasing the amount of permanent magnets to enhance certain properties further raises material costs, potentially reducing cost-effectiveness and limiting market adoption.
Kinds and Applications of Halbach Arrays

| Linear Array
Form: A linear Halbach array is the most basic form, combining radial and tangential arrays.
Application: Linear Halbach arrays are primarily used in magnetic levitation trains, where the array is horizontally installed in the center of the vehicle.

| Cylindrical Array
Form: A cylindrical Halbach array is formed by connecting the ends of a linear array to create a circular shape.
Application: Cylindrical Halbach arrays are used in permanent magnet motors, magnetic bearings, and sputters.
Methods of Assembling Halbach Array
| Manual Assembly: Based on the array’s topology, magnets with pre-determined magnetization are glued together. Due to the strong repulsive forces between the magnet segments, clamps and molds are often required during assembly. Although this method is less efficient, it is easier to implement.

| Molding: A complete magnet is formed using molding techniques, and then magnetized in a specially designed fixture. This method is more efficient and suitable for mass production, though it requires specialized magnetizing fixtures and processes.
