Do Magnets Affect Batteries?

Do Magnets Affect Batteries? The answer to this question depends on the context in which magnets are used. We will discuss it in the article.

Magnets

Magnets possess magnetic properties that enable them to attract metals such as iron, cobalt, and nickel. The magnetism of a magnet is determined by its internal magnetic domain structure, with the direction of the magnetic domains determining the magnet’s poles (north and south). The basic rule of magnets is that like poles repel each other while opposite poles attract.

Batteries

A battery is a device that converts chemical energy into electrical energy. Inside a battery, there are positive and negative electrodes along with an electrolyte, which generates an electric current through chemical reactions. For example, in a common zinc-manganese dry cell, zinc undergoes oxidation by losing electrons in the electrolyte. In contrast, manganese dioxide undergoes reduction by gaining electrons, creating a continuous current in the external circuit.

Effects of Magnets on Regular Dry Batteries

Without an External Circuit

For regular dry batteries, which generate electrical energy through chemical reactions, the magnetic field of a magnet does not directly interfere with the internal chemical reactions. Thus, magnets have virtually no effect on ordinary dry batteries (like AA or AAA batteries). The chemical reactions inside the batteries are unaffected by a magnetic field. Therefore, when not connected to an external circuit, magnets have essentially no impact on dry batteries, and there is no need to worry about any damage caused by magnets under normal usage.

With External Circuit

When a dry battery is connected to an external circuit, there may be slight interactions between the magnetic field of the magnet and the magnetic field generated by the current in the circuit, according to the principle of electromagnetic induction. However, this effect is usually minimal and can generally be disregarded.

Do Magnets Affect Batteries? Normal Usage

In everyday use, common magnets (like those in magnetic charging devices) have a minimal impact on rechargeable batteries. The internal chemical reactions of the battery are not directly affected by the outer magnetic field, and magnets do not alter the charging and discharging performance or lifespan of the battery. For example, the magnets in magnetic wireless chargers are primarily used for precise positioning of the coils to ensure charging efficiency, without causing any harm to the battery.

Long-term Exposure

If a battery is exposed to a strong outer magnetic field for an extended period (such as near large electromagnetic equipment), it may lead to the following issues:

| Increased Self-discharge: The magnetic field might disrupt the internal chemical balance of the battery, accelerating the self-discharge rate, resulting in faster depletion of the battery’s charge.

| Capacity Deterioration: Prolonged exposure to a strong magnetic field may induce structural changes within the battery, hastening aging and reducing its capacity.

| Functional Anomalies: For devices that contain magnetic devices, an outer strong magnetic field might interfere with the normal operation of navigation systems, leading to navigation failures and other related issues.

Do magnets affect batteries? In everyday usage, there is generally no need to worry about the effects of ordinary magnets on batteries. However, for safety reasons, it may be advisable for us to store them separately.
