Electroplating is a key process for ensuring the long-term stable operation and excellent performance of neodymium magnets. It plays a significant role in guaranteeing the quality of the magnets, extending their service life, and expanding their application areas.
Reasons for Electroplating
The standard electrode potential for Nd is E0(Nd3+/Nd) = -2.431V. The electrochemical potentials of different phases in neodymium iron boron permanent magnets vary. The neodymium-rich and boron-rich phases act as anodes in relation to the Nd2Fe14B main phase and are prone to corrosion.

Due to the distribution of the neodymium-rich and boron-rich phases along the grain boundaries of the main phase, the difference in area between the anode and cathode during the electrochemical corrosion process leads to significant corrosion current density on a small amount of boundary phase, accelerating the corrosion at the grain boundaries. Once the boundary phase is corroded, the main phase grains lose their bonding with surrounding grains and may fall off.
Electroplating Process for Neodymium Magnets
Before electroplating neodymium iron boron permanent magnets, the surface must undergo cleaning processes such as chamfering, degreasing, acid etching, and ultrasonic cleaning to achieve a well-bonded, low-porosity, and durable corrosion-resistant coating.
Common Types of Electroplating for Neodymium Magnets
Currently dominant coating types include: Electroplated Zn; Electroplated Ni; Electroplated NiCuNi; Electroplated NiCu + chemical Ni; Electroplated NiCuNi + electrophoretic epoxy.

The standard electrode potential for nickel is E0 = -0.25V, which is relative to NdFeB and acts as a cathodic protection coating. There are very high requirements for the density of the nickel coating. Typically, a multi-layer system like NiCuNi is used to reduce the porosity of the coating. While the cost of electroplated NiCuNi is relatively high, its outstanding performance in high-temperature resistance, oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance, and decorative quality makes it a mainstream protective technology for neodymium iron boron in the industry, along with good mechanical properties such as compressive, bending, and impact resistance.

The standard electrode potential for zinc is E0 = -0.762V (the self-corrosion potential of electroplated zinc for NdFeB is more negative than that of NdFeB). Zn coatings can provide protective coatings for NdFeB magnets. Due to its lack of magnetism and relatively low cost, zinc is widely used.
Importance of Electroplating for Neodymium Magnets
–Corrosion and Oxidation Resistance: Neodymium iron boron materials are highly reactive and readily interact with oxygen in air and water vapor, leading to surface oxidation and corrosion, particularly in warm, humid, high-temperature, or electrochemical environments. Electroplating creates a metal coating (such as zinc, nickel, or nickel-copper) on the magnet’s surface, effectively isolating the magnet from the external environment, blocking corrosive agents from contacting it, and significantly extending the magnet’s service life.

–Enhanced Surface Mechanical Properties: The electroplated layer strengthens the hardness, wear resistance, and scratch resistance of the magnet’s surface, reducing surface damage caused by mechanical friction and collisions, and improving mechanical stability under complex working conditions.
–Meeting Special Application Requirements: Certain high-end applications require specific attributes such as corrosion resistance, electrical conductivity, and insulation in magnets. Electroplating can cater to these particular requirements by selecting different coating materials, thereby expanding the application range of neodymium iron boron magnets.
