What Factors Affect the Magnetic Performance of Magnets

Understanding the factors that influence the magnetic performance of magnets is crucial for accurately matching material selection and design to application requirements. A deep understanding of these influencing factors is a key focus of this discussion.

Parameters Used to Measure the Magnetic Performance of Magnets

| Remanence (Br): Remanence refers to the magnetic field strength that remains in a magnet after the external magnetic field is removed following saturation. This parameter directly affects the magnet’s demonstrated pull strength; a higher remanence indicates a stronger attraction to ferromagnetic materials. Practically, higher remanence means greater adhesive capability.

| Coercivity (Hc): Coercivity measures a magnet’s resistance to demagnetization. A magnet with higher coercivity can maintain its original magnetic properties when an opposing magnetic field is applied, demonstrating greater stability and being less susceptible to external interference that could weaken or eliminate its magnetic field.

| Maximum Energy Product ((BH)max): This parameter represents the maximum amount of magnetic energy stored in a unit volume of the magnet, reflecting the overall magnetic performance of magnets. A larger (BH)max value indicates that, under the same volume conditions, the magnet can provide higher magnetism and has greater work capabilities.

Factors Influencing the Magnetic Performance of Magnets

Material Composition

| Rare Earth Elements: Neodymium is a key determinant of the performance of NdFeB magnets. Generally, a higher concentration leads to better magnetic energy product and coercivity. However, excessive neodymium content can increase costs. Additionally, the proper addition of dysprosium (Dy) and terbium (Tb) can enhance the induction intensity and thermal stability, although too much can lead to performance degradation.

Factors Influencing the Magnetic Performance of Magnets: Material Composition

| Transition Metal Elements: Iron is a primary component of NdFeB magnets. Both too high and too low iron content can degrade magnetic performance. Cobalt can enhance corrosion resistance and magnetic energy product, but may reduce induction intensity. Other elements, such as copper, aluminum, gallium, tin, and zinc, can form non-magnetic grain boundary phases, decoupling the main phase magnetically while enhancing corrosion resistance; however, this reduces the energy product.

| Other Elements: Boron is a significant component in NdFeB, which can refine grain size and improve magnetic performance. Adding small amounts of niobium (Nb), molybdenum (Mo), vanadium (V), tungsten (W), zirconium (Zr), and titanium (Ti) can enhance corrosion resistance, though this may lower the energy product.

Material Purity

| Main Components: The purity of the main raw materials typically needs to reach 99.5%. Otherwise, deviations in the alloy composition could lead to fluctuations in magnetic performance and potentially create significant amounts of waste.

| Minor Components: The purity of secondary materials should also be around 99% to ensure accurate alloy composition and stable magnetic performance.

Shape of the Magnet

The shape of the magnets also significantly impacts their magnetic performance of magnets. Long, bar-shaped magnets typically produce a more uniform and stable magnetic field because the magnetic field lines transition more orderly from one pole to the other. The magnetic field of a bar magnet is concentrated at the ends, often resulting in a higher surface magnetic force compared to round or block magnets made of the same material. In contrast, irregularly shaped magnets may lead to uneven magnetic field distributions and even leakage of magnetic flux. Therefore, careful design of the magnet’s shape is necessary to achieve the desired magnetic performance of magnets.

Factors Influencing the Magnetic Performance of Magnets: Shape of the Magnet

Additionally, the demagnetization factor is related to the shape of the magnet. It describes the internal demagnetization effects of the material and is primarily dependent on the material’s magnetic susceptibility, as well as its geometric shape and size.

Size of the Magnet

The size of the magnets has a pronounced effect on the magnetic performance of magnets. Generally, the larger the magnet, the stronger the magnetic field it produces. This is because larger magnets can accommodate more magnetic moments internally, increasing the field strength. Therefore, selecting the appropriate size in the design process is essential to ensure that the required magnetic performance of magnets is achieved.

Magnetic Circuit Design

Factors Influencing the Magnetic Performance of Magnets: Magnetic Circuit Design

Magnets typically work in conjunction with other magnetic materials or conductive materials to form a magnetic circuit system. The rationality of the magnetic circuit structure directly affects the utilization efficiency of the magnetic field strength and the magnetic performance of magnets.

A scientifically sound magnetic circuit design can effectively direct and concentrate the magnetic field, reducing flux leakage and losses, thus enhancing the magnetic performance of the magnet in specific working environments. For example, in motor manufacturing, optimizing the combination and spatial layout of permanent magnets and magnetic yokes can significantly improve the electromagnetic conversion efficiency of the motor.
