Ferrite Beads

Ferrite beads are designed to suppress high-frequency noise and spike interference on signal and power lines. They can also absorb electrostatic pulses.

Definition of Ferrite Beads

Ferrite beads are commonly used filtering components by engineers to suppress high-frequency noise in circuits. They are essentially equivalent to a resistor in series with an inductor. Regarding circuit functionality, ferrite beads, and inductors operate on the same principle, differing only in their specific frequency characteristics.

Definition of Ferrite Beads

The main component of ferrite beads is ferrite material, a type of ferromagnetic material with a cubic crystal structure. Ferrite materials, such as ferrite magnets, can be classified as magnesium-iron alloy or nickel-iron alloy. They possess manufacturing processes and mechanical properties similar to ceramics and typically appear black.

Principle of Ferrite Beads

As the signal frequency increases, it becomes easier for the signal to radiate outward. Since most signal lines do not have shielding, they effectively act as antennas, picking up various chaotic high-frequency signals from the surrounding environment. These signals superimpose on the originally transmitted signals, altering the useful signal being transmitted and affecting the normal operation of electronic components.

They serve as common anti-interference components in electronic circuits and are effective in suppressing high-frequency noise. They are generally made from ferrite materials (Mn-Zn) and exhibit different impedance characteristics at various frequencies, typically possessing low impedance at low frequencies.

As the signal frequency increases, the impedance of the ferrite beads increases sharply. The ferrite material generates hysteresis loss and eddy current loss, converting the high-frequency portion of the interference signal into thermal energy, thereby achieving interference suppression. Thus, they allow normal useful signals to pass through while effectively suppressing high-frequency interference signals, and they are cost-effective.

Structure of Ferrite Beads

The internal structure of a ferrite bead consists of a coil, a ferrite core, an outer coating, and the packaging. A typical structure of a flat ferrite bead is illustrated: structurally, ferrite beads are similar to inductors, primarily differing in the winding count of the core and coil.

Advantages of Ferrite Beads

Ferrite beads are a novel type of anti-interference device that functions similarly to a filter. They effectively address the issue of high-frequency interference suppression in power lines, signal lines, and connectors, while also offering a series of advantages such as simplicity of use, convenience, effectiveness, and minimal space occupation.

Using ferrite anti-interference ferrite beads to suppress electromagnetic interference (EMI) is an economical, simple, and effective method that has been widely applied in various electronic devices.

Classification of Ferrite Beads

By Material

Different Types and Shapes of Ferrite Beads

Ferrite beads can also be classified based on the type of ferrite material used for manufacturing: magnesium-iron alloy ferrite beads and nickel-iron alloy ferrite beads. Different ferrite materials have varying permeability (μ) and magnetic flux density (BS) parameters, affecting the frequency characteristics of the ferrite beads.

By Application Scenario

| Standard Type: Used in situations where the current is not too high (typically less than 600 mA) and without special requirements. Its DC resistance is generally a few tenths of an ohm, with an impedance range typically between tens to thousands of ohms, effectively suppressing and absorbing noise interference.

| High-Current Type: Applied in scenarios with higher currents. In these cases, the ferrite bead requires very low DC resistance, typically around an order of magnitude lower than that of standard-type ferrite beads, and the impedance is also relatively low, usually ranging from a few ohms to tens of ohms.

| Spike Type: This model of ferrite bead exhibits a sharp increase in impedance within a certain frequency range, achieving a high attenuation effect at a specific frequency while minimally impacting the useful signal.

Major Parameters of Ferrite Beads

| Impedance: The impedance of ferrite beads is measured under specific conditions (typically at 100 MHz frequency), commonly labeled as “600 ohms @ 100 MHz,” indicating that the impedance of the magnetic bead at 100 MHz frequency is 600 ohms. Generally, the greater the impedance, the better the noise suppression effect. Higher impedance results in greater heat generated during noise passage. The impedance of ferrite beads is not fixed and varies with frequency and current; it represents the AC impedance.

| Direct Current Resistance (DCR): The resistance value exhibited by ferrite beads when subjected to direct current. A lower DCR is preferable as it results in a smaller voltage drop across the magnetic bead, leading to less attenuation of useful signals. DCR is determined by the wire length, winding diameter, and packaging.

Major Parameters of Ferrite Beads: Direct Current Resistance

| Hysteresis Loss: This loss occurs when ferromagnetic materials are magnetized repeatedly under alternating magnetic fields, causing internal magnetic domains to move back and forth and consume energy, resulting in energy loss. Hysteresis loss is proportional to the frequency of alternating magnetic fields and the area of the hysteresis loop.

| Eddy Current Loss: When the magnetic flux in ferromagnetic materials alternates, it induces electromotive force and current, resulting in swirling currents known as eddy currents. These currents produce losses in the internal resistance of ferromagnetic materials, referred to as eddy current loss.

How to Choose the Right Ferrite Beads

| Suitable Kinds: Select appropriate packaging material based on the application scene of the magnetic bead to reasonably reduce costs and optimize PCB design. Typically, larger magnetic bead structures can handle higher currents. Considering the manufacturing process and application scenarios, high-voltage, high-current power filtering typically uses plug-in ferrite beads, while signal lines and low-voltage, low-current power sources utilize surface-mount ferrite beads.

| Suitable Rated Currents: Ferrite bead specification sheets usually provide rated current parameters. During normal operation, the working current of the circuit should not exceed the rated current; otherwise, the bead may be damaged. The rated current is typically defined as the current level that ensures a self-temperature rise not exceeding 20°C to 40°C.

| Suitable Impedance: Correctly selecting the right impedance by consulting the impedance curve in the magnetic bead specification sheet and choosing models with higher impedances at noise frequencies rather than selecting those with high nominal impedance values. When selecting impedance, the principle of minimizing the attenuation of useful signals should also be taken into account, especially for ferrite beads intended to suppress broadband noise interference, where impedance characteristics within certain frequency bands are also important.

| Suitable Direct Current Resistance: DCR has a relatively small impact on the filtering performance but significantly affects their temperature rise. The impedance curve of ferrite beads is strongly correlated with temperature rise. Selecting ferrite beads with suitably low DCR will significantly impact filtering performance. In practical applications, they should have lower DCR for higher impedance.
