Introduction: Licensed Neodymium Magnet
Neodymium magnets were invented by Japanese and American independently in 1980s. After four decades, hundreds of patents related to manufacturing process and material composition are still valid and owned by Hitachi Metal Ltd. (HML). Up to 2016, HML still owned over six-hundred valid patents directly related to sintered neodymium magnets. These patents comprise both component and process patents spanning the entire manufacturing process for neodymium magnet products.
Note on naming: In January 2023, Hitachi Metals, Ltd. was renamed Proterial, Ltd. The NdFeB patent licensing program continues under the Proterial name, so “Hitachi licensed” and “Proterial licensed” neodymium magnets refer to the same certification.
Who Needs Licensed Neodymium Magnet and Why?
In the USA and Japan, large corporations that use neodymium magnets typically only source their magnets from Hitachi-licensed manufacturers, either directly or indirectly. This is due to the potential legal risks of using unlicensed magnets. Hitachi patented product certificates are a critical issue for these companies, and their legal departments will want to ensure that their neodymium magnets are sourced from one of the Hitachi-patent holders to avoid potential lawsuits.

Upon request, we can provide a Hitachi license certificate for our neodymium magnets and magnetic assemblies that contain neodymium magnets.
