The topic of this article is the magnetic dipole, including its characteristics and applications.
Definition of Magnetic Dipole
A dipole consists of a pair of magnets separated by a gap. They come in various shapes and sizes, and the magnets are typically mounted on a steel frame to enhance magnetic efficiency.

Materials Used in Magnetic Dipoles
| High Magnetic Field Scenarios: The magnets used are neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets and samarium-cobalt (SmCo) magnets.
Cost-Saving Scenarios: Ferrite magnets can be chosen since they are cheaper than rare-earth magnets.

| High-Temperature Applications: Aluminum-nickel-cobalt (AlNiCo) magnets are commonly used due to their good temperature stability, maintaining relatively stable magnetic strength even in high-temperature environments above 500℃.
Materials Used for Magnetic Dipole Housing
The outer frame utilizes high-permeability materials, and Tengye Company offers various material options, including pure iron and soft magnetic alloys such as Permalloy.
Characteristics of Magnetic Dipoles

| Magnetic Field Strength Distribution: All magnetic flux is contained within the gap of the magnets, and there is no magnetic flux at the back of the magnetic dipole. The magnetic field in the gap typically has lower strength at the edges and higher strength in the middle. Special magnetic components can be used to produce a uniform magnetic field if required.
| Magnitude of Magnetic Field Strength: The magnetic field generated by a magnetic dipole can be very high; if a conical shape is used at the top and the gap is small, the maximum magnetic field strength can reach up to 3.0 Tesla.

| Magnetic Field and Air Gap: A small air gap can produce a higher magnetic field, while a larger air gap can produce a more uniform magnetic field.
Halbach Magnetic Dipole
A Halbach dipole can generate a uniform magnetic field over a large area. It produces a strong magnetic field within a circular aperture. In this configuration, the magnetic field strength in the aperture is proportional to the natural logarithm of the ratio of outer diameter (OD) to inner diameter (ID).

Stelter Array Magnetic Dipole
The Stelter array dipole utilizes rectangular magnets to achieve the desired results within a rectangular aperture. For a Stelter array, the internal magnetic field is proportional to the natural logarithm of the ratio of the outer perimeter to the inner perimeter. Stelter array dipoles can generate a large magnetic field over a wide area, with the strongest magnetic field reaching 3 Tesla through a 5 mm air gap. They have cost advantages but do not produce a uniform field.
Applications of Magnetic Dipoles
| Orienting thin layers of magnetic material as they are deposited as thin films.
| Control of high-energy particle beams.
