Magnetic Field Strength

Magnetic field strength is a crucial technical indicator for magnets and applications requiring spatial magnetic fields. The magnetic field strength or magnetic flux density at specific points is often considered a key technical requirement.

What Is Magnetic Field Strength?

Magnetic field strength represents the magnetic flux density at a specific point on the permanent magnet’s surface, typically measured in Gauss (Gs). Since the magnetic field on the magnet’s surface is non-uniform, the values vary at different points on the surface.

The magnetic field strength is measured when the magnet is in an open or semi-open circuit state, measuring the magnetic flux density in a small area. It is a directional vector, with significant variations between different faces of the magnet.

We typically refer to the value perpendicular to the magnetization direction. Standard measurements of surface magnetic field strength usually focus on the center and edge points of the magnet surface.

How to Measure Magnetic Field Strength

A Gaussmeter, a precision instrument specifically designed for measuring magnetic field strength, is widely used due to its high accuracy and convenience.

| Preparation: Calibrate the Gaussmeter before measurement to ensure accurate readings. Most Gaussmeters have built-in calibration functions or can be calibrated using standard magnets with known field strengths.

| Magnet placement: Secure the magnet on a non-magnetic platform to avoid interference from other magnetic fields.

| Field measurement: Turn on the Gaussmeter and slowly move the probe toward the magnet’s surface until reaching the designated measurement point. For accurate data, measure multiple positions, including at least the center and edge points. Magnet manufacturers typically measure both center and maximum edge surface fields. For strict requirements, measurements should be taken on both sides of the magnet.

How to Measure Magnetic Field Strength

| Data recording: Record the Gaussmeter readings at each measurement point. If the Gaussmeter has data logging capabilities, use this feature to store the data.

Factors Affecting Magnetic Field Strength

| Remanence: A crucial factor affecting magnetic field strength. Different magnetic materials have different remanence values, resulting in different measurements even for identical shapes.

| Shape: The surface field is influenced by shape and dimensions. Different shapes yield different values. The ratio of height to diameter affects the surface field (in the magnetization direction), with higher ratios typically yield stronger fields.

magnets' shapes affect magnetic field strength

| Assembly method: In magnet assemblies, special magnetic circuit designs can enhance surface field strength, potentially exceeding remanence values.

| Measurement position: Field strength decreases with distance from the magnet. Center positions typically show lower values than edge positions.

| Measuring equipment: Different Gaussmeters may yield different results due to varying internal sensors.

Applications

Magnetic flux leakage detection: Used in pipeline inspection, where permanent magnets saturate pipe walls while collecting magnetic signals. Changes in these signals can indicate corrosion or leakage issues.

FAQs

Can Magnetic Field Strength Evaluate Magnet Performance?

No, this is a common misconception. It isn’t objective enough to fully assess magnet performance and shouldn’t be used as a trading criterion. Reasons include:

| Different countries and brands of Gaussmeters may give varying results.

| Measurement technique variations (90-degree probe placement is crucial but often not achieved for technical staff).

| Environmental factors affect measurements.

Magnet performance is mainly determined by three parameters:

magnetmanila three

| Remanence (Br): Remaining magnetic flux density after magnetization.

| Coercivity (Hc): Reverse field required to demagnetize.

| Maximum Energy Product (BH): Represents magnetic energy density in the air gap.

Does Higher Magnetic Field Strength Indicate Stronger Magnetic Force?

This depends:

| For magnets of identical size and shape, a higher surface field generally means a stronger force.

| For different shapes or sizes, the comparison is meaningless.

What’s The Relationship Between Magnetic Field Strength and Remanence?

Remanence is the internal magnetic flux density after saturation, a constant property under specific conditions. It’s a key factor in determining magnetic field strength. Since remanence is measured in closed circuits while the magnetic field strength is measured in open circuits, the magnetic field strength of a single magnet typically doesn’t exceed half its remanence value.
