Magnetic materials are key components of motors, and their performance differences have a far-reaching impact on motors in various aspects.
Impact of Magnetic Materials on Motor Magnetic Field Performance
Advantages of High Magnetic Permeability Materials

Magnetic permeability is a physical quantity that measures a material’s ability to conduct magnetic fields. High-permeability materials, such as silicon steel sheets, can concentrate and conduct magnetic fields, thereby generating a stronger magnetic field in motors. In transformers and induction motors, using these materials can increase the magnetic flux density in the core.
For permanent magnet motors, high magnetic energy product permanent materials (such as neodymium iron boron) can produce strong magnetic fields in a smaller volume, achieving a compact design for the motor. For example, in small precision motors, the application of these materials allows for a reduction in motor size while meeting the strict spatial requirements of the equipment.
Limitations of Low Magnetic Permeability Materials
In contrast, low-permeability materials produce weaker magnetic fields under the same conditions, which may lead to insufficient magnetic flux in motors, thereby affecting the electromagnetic torque output. In motor design, if low-permeability materials are chosen, it may be necessary to increase the current to compensate for the inadequate magnetic field strength, resulting in increased energy consumption and heat generation.
Impact of Magnetic Materials on Motor Energy Consumption
Energy-Saving Advantages of Low-Iron-Loss Materials

Iron loss in magnetic materials includes hysteresis loss and eddy current loss. Using materials with low iron loss, such as high-performance electrical steel, can reduce energy losses in motors under alternating magnetic fields. During motor operation, the magnetic field in the core continuously changes, leading to hysteresis and eddy current losses.
Utilizing low iron loss materials can lower core losses in motors, enhancing motor efficiency. For instance, in some efficient motors, the use of new amorphous alloy materials shows iron loss significantly lower than traditional silicon steel materials, substantially improving motor energy efficiency and reducing operating costs.
Negative Impacts of High Iron Loss Materials
High iron loss materials lead to excessive heat generation in motors during operation, wasting energy and increasing motor temperature, which can compromise insulation performance and lifespan. When the motor temperature becomes too high, it may cause insulation materials to age and fail, potentially leading to motor malfunctions.
Impact of Magnetic Materials on Motor Stability
Stability of High Coercivity Materials

Coercivity is a measure of a magnetic material’s resistance to demagnetization. High coercivity permanent materials can maintain a stable magnetic field during motor operation. For example, in high-speed motors or those operating in harsh environments (such as high temperatures or strong magnetic field interference), high coercivity permanent magnets can ensure that the motor’s magnetic field is not weakened, thereby guaranteeing stable operation.
For motors requiring frequent starts and stops or significant load variations, high coercivity materials can quickly restore the motor’s magnetic field to a stable state, enhancing dynamic response performance.
Risks of Low Coercivity Materials
Low coercivity magnetic materials are prone to demagnetization under external interference factors (such as high temperatures or opposing magnetic fields). Once demagnetization occurs, the motor’s magnetic field strength decreases, leading to reduced output torque and unstable speed.
Choosing Suitable Magnetic Materials for Permanent Magnet Motors

| Temperature Environment: In high-temperature environments, such as motors used in the metallurgical industry or aerospace engine accessories, it is essential to select magnetic materials with high Curie temperature and excellent thermal stability. In permanent magnet motors, samarium-cobalt materials stand out due to their Curie temperatures of up to 700 to 800°C, which allows them to maintain magnetic properties better than neodymium iron boron materials (typically around 300 to 400°C) under high-temperature conditions.
Additionally, the temperature coefficient of the magnetic materials—reflecting the sensitivity of their magnetic performance to temperature changes—should be considered. Choosing materials with a low temperature coefficient helps reduce magnetic performance loss.
In low-temperature environments, certain magnetic materials may exhibit variations in magnetic performance or become brittle. For example, at extremely low temperatures, the magnetic permeability of some permanent magnetic materials may decrease. Therefore, for motors operating in cold conditions (such as polar scientific equipment or space probes), testing the performance of magnetic materials at low temperatures is crucial to ensure reliable operation.
| Operating Environment: When motors are exposed to acidic or alkaline gases in the chemical industry, or corrosive liquid environments like seawater, the corrosion resistance of magnetic materials becomes a key consideration. Ferrite permanent magnetic materials, made from iron oxide, show excellent corrosion resistance, making them a preferred choice in chemically corrosive environments. Additionally, the corrosion resistance of core materials, such as silicon steel sheets, can be enhanced through surface coating technologies, such as using nickel-copper-nickel three-layer coatings or other materials (gold, silver, zinc, tin, epoxy resin, polytetrafluoroethylene, etc.).
Cost Considerations: For applications that do not require high magnetic field strength but are cost-sensitive, such as small household appliance motors, moderately performing and lower-cost magnetic materials can be chosen. Ordinary silicon steel sheets or ferrite permanent magnetic materials are suitable options for these applications, meeting basic magnetic field requirements while controlling costs.
