Ring magnets with different magnetic poles optimize the magnetic field distribution to meet performance requirements such as efficiency, precision, and stability in various devices. They are key components in modern applications such as electric motors.
Magnetic Pole Distribution Methods For Ring Magnets
The magnetization direction of ring magnets primarily includes axial magnetization, radial magnetization, and their corresponding multipolar forms.
| Axial Magnetization: This refers to the magnet being magnetized along its own axial direction, with the thickness direction being magnetized, resulting in the two opposing flat surfaces as the N and S poles. In this configuration, the magnetic flux closes along the axis during use. A typical application is the disk magnet used in axial motor rotors. The magnetic field generated in this manner exhibits a difference between the inner and outer surfaces of the magnetic ring—typically, the magnetic circuit nearer the center has a shorter path and a stronger magnetic field.

In automotive electronic systems such as ABS wheel speed sensors, axially polarized ring magnets can detect wheel speeds, providing real-time signals to the system.
| Radial Bipole Magnetization: This refers to magnetization along the radial direction, where the magnetic field lines close within the plane of the ring body, resulting in a pair of N and S poles on the outer and inner circumferences of the ring magnet.
Applications: This method is commonly used in traditional radial flux motors, such as brushless DC motors and synchronous motors, suitable for applications that require stable rotating magnetic fields.

| Radial Multipole Magnetization: This configuration involves creating multiple alternating N/S poles around the radial circumference of the ring magnet. The most common case is an evenly spaced multipole distribution, such as 4-pole or 8-pole arrangements. Multipole ring magnets are widely used in encoders and motor applications, significantly reducing the number of internal components and simplifying assembly complexity. The magnetic field distribution of multipole magnetic rings is more refined, which can greatly enhance equipment efficiency and stability, forming neat magnetic field lines.

Increasing the number of pole pairs can reduce cogging torque and improve torque waveform, being widely applied in high-performance motors like electric vehicle hub motors and servo motors, which can enhance motor efficiency and are suitable for high-torque and precision-demanding scenarios. However, this also requires more precise designs for the magnetization coils.

Magnetization Methods and Device Design
The magnetization of ring magnets typically employs specialized magnetization coils and pulsed magnetic sources, considering factors such as coil structure and pulse parameters.
