Magnetic Strip Zippers

Magnetic strip zippers differ from traditional zippers in that their core function is based on the adsorption force between magnets to open and close, rather than the interlocking structure of traditional zipper teeth.

Components of Magnetic Strip Zippers

| Ferrite Magnetic Powder: The magnetic material is primarily composed of iron oxide (Fe₂O₃) and other metal oxides such as barium oxide (BaO) or strontium oxide (SrO), forming ferrite compounds like barium ferrite (BaFe₁₂O₁₉) or strontium ferrite (SrFe₁₂O₁₉). This constitutes about 85%-92% of the composition, serving as the core component that provides magnetic properties, allowing the zipper to close or attract through magnetic force.

| Binder: Commonly made of chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) or other synthetic rubber and plastic materials, making up about 5%-9%. Its role is to bind the ferrite magnetic powder together, giving the magnetic strip zipper flexibility and processability, enabling it to adapt to the bending and stretching actions of the zipper.

| Additives: These may include coupling agents, plasticizers, and anti-aging agents, typically in small amounts (usually 1%-3%). Coupling agents can improve the adhesion between the ferrite magnetic powder and the binder, plasticizers can enhance flexibility, and anti-aging agents can increase the aging resistance of the magnetic strip zipper.

Advantages of Magnetic Strip Zippers

| Automatic Opening and Closing: Magnetic strip zippers utilize the adsorption force of magnets, allowing for convenient operation that functions on the principle of “comes together when closed, opens with a pull.” This eliminates the need for the repeated tugging typical of traditional zippers; a gentle pull or bringing them near completes the opening and closing, making the operation smoother and more effortless, especially for one-handed use or for those with limited hand mobility.

| Self-aligning Functionality: The magnet design of magnetic strip zippers typically features self-aligning characteristics, automatically correcting the positioning of both sides of the zipper, ensuring accurate alignment when closed. This reduces issues such as jamming or misalignment caused by manual adjustments, facilitating smoother opening and closing.

| Soft and Customizable: Many magnetic strip zippers are made from flexible magnetic wire or soft materials and can be easily cut to different lengths or shapes as needed, accommodating various clothing or item design requirements, providing designers greater creative flexibility.

Disadvantages of Magnetic Strip Zippers

| Stability Issues with Magnetic Force: Under extreme temperature conditions (such as very low or high temperatures), the magnetic attraction may weaken, resulting in insecure closure. After prolonged use, the magnetic strips may lose their adsorption strength due to wear, aging, or degradation of magnetic properties, impacting closure effectiveness.

| Limited Tensile Strength: Compared to traditional zippers, magnetic strip zippers may not maintain closure under significant pulling forces, as the magnetic force might not be sufficient, leading to the zipper being pulled apart. Thus, they may not be suitable for applications requiring high strength.

Applications of Magnetic Strip Zippers

| Apparel: Designers often leverage the technological feel and convenience of magnetic strip zippers to create innovative clothing with features such as detachable components and quick-change designs, enhancing the practicality and fun of garments.

| Automotives: Used in decorative strips and panels for car interiors, magnetic strip zippers allow for quick installation and removal, facilitating personalized customization or changes in interior styles, enhancing the fashion and technological appeal of automotive interiors.

Customization of Magnetic Strip Zippers

Tengye offers customization of magnetic strip zippers based on customer needs.

| Magnetic Strength Customization: Depending on the usage scenarios and requirements, the magnetic strength of the product can be adjusted to suit outdoor equipment needing more secure closures or fashion garments requiring easier opening and closing.

| Functionality Customization: Different zipper shapes can be designed according to customer specifications, or special functions (such as waterproofing or anti-static properties) can be added, or combinations with other accessories (like buttons or Velcro) can be made for more complex closure mechanisms.

| Size and Color Customization: Length, width, and color of the zippers can be customized to match the overall style of the customer’s products.

Testing of Magnetic Strip Zippers

Tengye can provide various types of testing to ensure the quality of magnetic strip zippers.

| Environmental Adaptability Testing: Exposing the zippers to extreme environments such as high temperatures, low temperatures, and humidity to observe any changes in magnetic performance, mechanical properties, and appearance, and checking for issues like corrosion, deformation, or weakened magnetic force.

| VOCs Testing: This refers to assessing the volatile organic compound content and release of the zipper products.

| Odor Testing: An important aspect of zipper quality testing is assessing whether the zippers produce any unusual odors during use or storage, to determine compliance with safety, environmental, and comfort requirements.

| Flammability Testing: Evaluating the burning performance and safety when in contact with fire sources, primarily to ensure that the zippers do not burn excessively, particularly suitable for zippers used in clothing.

| SOC Testing: Substances of Concern testing is common in the automotive industry to meet environmental regulations (such as REACH) related to materials used in automotive components.

| Water Resistance Testing: The water resistance test is a key quality indicator for evaluating a zipper’s ability to resist water penetration under specific water pressure or spray conditions.
