Magnetization Saturation

Magnetization saturation is a key factor often overlooked in the field of magnetic materials. It is also the subject of this article.

Definition of Magnetization Saturation

Magnetization saturation is an important indicator of the effectiveness of magnetization. When a magnetic material is subjected to an external magnetic field, its internal magnetic domains align as closely as possible in the direction of the external magnetic field until they reach a limiting state.

Definition of Magnetization Saturation

At this point, the magnetic flux density of the material no longer increases significantly with the increase in the strength of the external magnetic field, thus achieving a saturated magnetization state. In contrast, unsaturated magnetization indicates that the arrangement of the internal magnetic domains has not reached the optimal state, and there is still room for increasing the magnetic flux density.

Classification of Magnetization Saturation

Based on the relationship between the magnetization energy and the intrinsic coercive force of the magnetic material, magnetization saturation can be classified into different categories:

| Unsaturated Magnetization: The magnetization energy does not reach more than 95% of the saturated magnetization energy. This is suitable for scenarios with lower magnetic requirements or adjustable magnetism, such as certain temporary magnets and low-power devices.

| Saturated Magnetization: The magnetization energy reaches 1.5 to 2 times the intrinsic coercive force of the magnetic material. This is suitable for scenarios requiring a strong and stable magnetic field, such as permanent magnet motors, generators, and speakers.

| Oversaturated Magnetization: The magnetization energy exceeds 3 times the intrinsic coercive force. This is primarily used in special environments where extremely high magnetic energy is required, but attention must be paid to potential performance fluctuations and material degradation issues.

Selection of Magnetization Saturation

The selection of magnetization saturation needs to comprehensively consider the characteristics of the magnetic material, application scenarios, and equipment conditions.

| Clarify Material Parameters: Obtain information about the magnetic material’s grade, intrinsic coercive force (Hcj), remanence (Br), dimensions, and magnetization direction. The coercive force varies significantly among different materials; for instance, the Hcj of sintered ferrites is approximately 2.5–4 kOe, while that of neodymium iron boron (N48H) is around 14 kOe, leading to different required magnetizing field strengths.

| Consider Application: For high-performance motors and generators, a strong and stable magnetic field is needed, so saturated or oversaturated magnetization should be chosen to ensure stable torque output. For magnetic sensors and relays, the magnetic field strength requirement is relatively low, and saturated magnetization is sufficient to meet the needs, avoiding performance fluctuations caused by oversaturation.

| Conduct Simulation or Experimental Verification: Use magnetic simulation software to model the magnetization process and predict magnetization effects under different magnetic field strengths, optimizing magnetization parameters. In actual production, determine the optimal magnetization strength through small batch experiments, testing indicators such as remanence, coercive force, and magnetic field uniformity to ensure compliance with application requirements.

| Combine with Equipment Capacity: The output magnetic field strength of magnetizing equipment is limited, and the appropriate magnetization strength should be selected based on the maximum magnetic field strength of the equipment. If the equipment cannot reach the required strength, it may need to be replaced or the materials and processes adjusted. Care should be taken with parameters such as pulse width and energy output to ensure compatibility with the magnetic material, avoiding inadequate energy or overload that could affect the magnetization effect.
