Magnets in Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors

Magnets are core components of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) and are crucial for achieving efficient, high-power-density, and reliable operation.

What is a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor?

A permanent magnet synchronous motor is a type of AC synchronous motor in which the magnetic field is generated by permanent magnets, producing a sinusoidal electromagnetic field. It includes the same rotor and stator as an induction motor, but the rotor uses permanent magnets to produce the magnetic field. Therefore, there is no need for winding magnetic field coils on the rotor. It is also known as a three-phase brushless permanent magnet sine wave motor.

Types of Magnets Used in Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors

| Neodymium Magnets: These magnets have excellent magnetic properties, high remanence, and high coercive force, allowing them to provide strong magnetic fields and torque. Additionally, neodymium-iron-boron magnets have good machinability. However, they are prone to rust and require surface coating.

| Samarium-Cobalt Magnets: The main feature of samarium-cobalt magnets is their low temperature coefficient of remanence, which offers excellent stability at high temperatures, allowing them to operate reliably in environments above 300°C. They also have strong corrosion and oxidation resistance, usually not requiring surface treatment, but they are expensive and challenging to process.

| Ferrite Magnets: Ferrite magnets are most advantageous due to their low cost. Because the raw materials are abundant and the manufacturing process is simple, their prices are significantly lower than those of rare earth magnets. However, their magnetic performance is relatively low, requiring an increase in the volume or thickness of the magnets to meet performance demands. They are not suitable for high-speed, high-power permanent magnet synchronous motors.

The Role of Magnets in Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors

| Providing a Constant Magnetic Field: Permanent magnets do not require external excitation current; they can generate a stable and continuous magnetic field, serving as the magnetic field for the motor. This magnetic field interacts with the rotating magnetic field generated by the three-phase AC flowing through the stator windings, forming the basis for converting electrical energy into mechanical energy. The electromagnetic force generated between the stator field and the rotor’s permanent magnet field creates electromagnetic torque, achieving the mechanical output of permanent magnet synchronous motors.

The Role of Magnets in Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors

| Determining Motor Performance: The magnetic properties of permanent magnets (such as remanence, coercive force, and magnetic energy product) directly influence the motor’s efficiency, power density, torque density, and speed control range. High-performance permanent magnets (like neodymium-iron-boron) enable the motor to produce greater power and torque without increasing volume or weight while improving operational efficiency.

| Simplifying Motor Structure: By replacing traditional windings, permanent magnets eliminate the need for complex components such as brushes and slip rings, making the motor structure simpler and more reliable. This reduces maintenance costs and lowers the risk of failures of permanent magnet synchronous motors due to mechanical wear.
