MagSafe magnets have been integrated into iPhones and accessories, offering seamless connectivity and enhanced functionality. We’ll explore the properties of MagSafe magnets in this article.

What is MagSafe

MagSafe: a magnetic technology developed by Apple for wireless charging and accessory connectivity for iPhones.

Before MagSafe, most wireless charging scenarios were on the idealized side, where you could just place your phone on the charging pad and leave it alone, automatically turning on the charging function. The reality is that when you misplace your phone a bit and don’t put it in the right place, it won’t respond on the charging pad. This is because wireless charging relies on the alignment of the transmitter and receiver coils, and traditional wireless chargers can’t achieve this effect, which can easily lead to lower charging efficiency and slower charging.

MagSafe’s design idea is to let the coils find their positions automatically and realize the alignment between the coils. This not only improves the charging conversion rate but also makes the whole experience more convenient. When the iPhone is close to the MagSafe charger, the coils inside the two are attracted to each other and aligned, without the need for human intervention. Even if you play with your phone while charging, it’s no problem at all, which is difficult to achieve with traditional wireless charging docks.

MagSafe Magnets

The magnets used in MagSafe technology are essential components that enable secure connections, precise alignment, and innovative features across a range of devices and accessories.

Kinds of MagSafe Magnets | Usually, Neodymium magnets, such as N52 or N52SH, are commonly used in MagSafe technology due to their exceptional strength and magnetic properties. These magnets provide the necessary magnetic force to ensure secure connections and alignment between devices and accessories.

Arrangement of MagSafe Magnets | In MagSafe accessories such as charging docks and cases, magnets are arranged in a circular array to facilitate precise alignment with MagSafe-compatible devices.

The Dimension of Magsafe Magnet Ring

As for the specific size of the MagSafe magnet ring, it can be customized according to the customer’s needs. Here is an example for reference.

MagSafe Magnets Help MagSafe Achieve 15W Fast Charging.

The MagSafe Magnets wireless charger delivers up to 15W of wireless charging power, while the maximum charging power of a traditional wireless charger is still 7.5W.

Wireless chargers usually regulate energy by adjusting the frequency and voltage, and mainstream wireless charging is a fixed-frequency regulator, which regulates the energy by adjusting the voltage.

MagSafe is also a fixed-frequency regulator, and there is a complicated circuit at the USB-C header, which is a circuit of boosting voltage. MagSafe inputs 9V voltage through the PD. After boosting to get a relatively high voltage (maximum voltage in the 15V or so), higher voltage is transferred to the coils and magnets, achieving the purpose of fast charging.

Other Applications for MagSafe Magnets

MagSafe was designed to simplify charging, but the magnets can do much more than that. In addition to charging, MagSafe has other applications.

For example, utilizing the magnetic properties of MagSafe magnets, many accessories, such as back clips and phone stands, could fit directly to the phone instead of relying on sticky pads or stickers.

Potential Problems with MagSafe Magnets

Demagnetization of Magnetic Cards | The MagSafe wireless magnetic coil can cause demagnetization of cards with magnetic stripes such as access cards, room cards, membership cards, etc. However, this does not affect the magnetic stripes on credit cards, and if you want to avoid this, you will need to spend extra money on a MagSafe Leather Card Holder to solve the problem.

Interference with Mechanical Watches | If a mechanical watch and MagSafe magnet are placed too close together, it will influence the function of the watch, usually 1 second slower per day. The solution is not to let each other close.
