Material Selection for Injection Molded Magnets

The material selection for injection molded magnets is a comprehensive process that balances performance and cost. The choice of materials directly determines the final performance, production cost, and applicable scenarios of injection-molded magnets.

Definition of Injection Molded Magnets

Injection-molded magnets are composite permanent magnets made by mixing magnetic powder with a binder (thermoplastic resin) and forming them through an injection molding process. They are primarily composed of magnetic powders (such as ferrite, NdFeB, and SmCo) mixed with a binder. Some products may also include additives. After compounding and granulating, the mixture is injected into a mold under high temperature and high pressure using an injection molding machine.

Definition of Binder for Injection Molded Magnets

The binder for injection-molded magnets refers to the polymer material used to bond the magnetic powder and solidify it into a specific shape during the manufacturing process. Its function is to uniformly coat and bind the magnetic powder (such as NdFeB) and, through injection molding, inject the mixture into a mold under high temperature and high pressure, giving the magnet its specific shape and enabling the integrated molding of magnets with complex geometries.

The binder for injection molded magnets is often used in conjunction with coupling agents, lubricants, antioxidants, and other additives to improve processing flowability and prevent oxidation of the magnetic powder.

Factors Influencing Material Selection for Injection Molded Magnets

| Temperature: The maximum operating temperature of the magnet is determined by both the magnetic powder and the binder. For example, if a high-grade NdFeB magnet does not demagnetize above 120°C, it must be matched with a high-temperature-resistant binder. Ferrite has better high-temperature resistance than NdFeB (up to above 180°C), but the temperature resistance of the binder must still be considered.

| Product Shape: The complexity of the shape also affects material selection for injection-molded magnets. The advantage of injection molding lies in its ability to form complex shapes (such as special-shaped magnets or multi-pole magnetic rings). The more complex the shape of the injection-molded magnet, the higher the flowability required of the binder. Materials with excellent flowability must be selected to ensure mold filling quality and shape integrity.

| Cost: Different cost budgets influence the material selection for injection molded magnets. If the budget is relatively high, NdFeB injection molded magnets can be chosen. If the budget is lower, ferrite materials have a lower cost and are suitable for users with a low budget. This must be balanced against the added value of the product.
