Miniature Samarium Cobalt Magnets

The importance of miniature samarium cobalt magnets lies in their “small size, high energy, and high stability,” making them indispensable key magnetic components in modern miniaturized equipment.

Definition of Miniature Samarium Cobalt Magnets

Miniature samarium cobalt magnets (SmCo micro magnets) are a miniaturized application of samarium cobalt (SmCo) rare earth permanent magnet materials. They are mainly composed of the rare earth element samarium (Sm) and the transition metal cobalt (Co), often with small amounts of copper (Cu), iron (Fe), zirconium (Zr), and other elements. Structurally, they are mainly divided into the 1:5 type (SmCo5) and the 2:17 type (Sm2Co17).

Definition of Miniature Samarium Cobalt Magnets

Due to their tiny size, high energy product, and stable magnetic performance, they are widely used in precision micro-devices with extremely high requirements for volume, weight, and stability.

Dimensions of Miniature Samarium Cobalt Magnets

The dimensional requirements of miniature samarium cobalt magnets vary depending on the product shape and specific application scenario, and highly customized solutions are typically available. For example, for block/rectangular magnets:

Length (L): Commonly 2mm – 10mm for miniature types.

Width (W): Commonly 1mm – 10mm for miniature types.

Thickness (T): Commonly 1mm – 10mm for miniature types.

Characteristics of Miniature Samarium Cobalt Magnets

| High Temperature Resistance: The maximum operating temperature can reach 250°C to 550°C. Above 180°C, the magnetic performance decay is minimal, and the temperature coefficient is extremely low (approx. -0.03%/K).

| High Magnetic Energy Product: SmCo magnets possess a high magnetic energy product. The 2:17 type can achieve 22–33 MGOe. Due to their excellent magnetic performance, providing a strong magnetic field, they are highly suitable for miniaturized and lightweight manufacturing.

| Corrosion Resistance: With a low iron content, SmCo magnets have strong corrosion and oxidation resistance. They are not easily rusted in humid or corrosive environments and can be used for a long time without the need for surface plating treatment.

| Brittleness: SmCo material is hard but brittle, lacking ductility, and is difficult to machine. Micro magnets require careful handling during processing and assembly and should not be used as structural parts to withstand mechanical impact.

| High Cost: Due to the use of expensive rare earth element samarium and the strategic metal cobalt, the manufacturing cost of SmCo magnets is relatively high. As micro magnets, the processing difficulty is even greater. Therefore, miniature SmCo magnets are typically used in high-end equipment with stringent performance requirements and sufficient budgets.

Applications of Miniature Samarium Cobalt Magnets

Because of their relatively high cost, miniature SmCo magnets are mostly used in high-end miniaturized scenarios where performance, size, and reliability are critical, rather than in cost-sensitive mass-produced products.

| Micro Magnetic Processors: Miniature samarium cobalt magnets can be used in micro computing or processing components that require precise magnetic field control, providing the necessary magnetic environment.

| Wireless Charging and Micro Connectors: They are used in wireless charging magnetic connectors for electronic devices such as mobile phones and chargers. Their excellent temperature resistance (withstanding the heat generated during charging) and tiny size enable efficient magnetic coupling.

| Micro Communication Components: These magnets can be used in micro communication components. Their high magnetic performance and small size meet the extremely strict requirements for minimal space and high performance in aerospace and communication equipment.
