NdFeB Magnet Orientation

The process of NdFeB magnet orientation determines, at the microscopic level, the macroscopic performance of the magnet through magnetic-field alignment, and serves as the technical guarantee for achieving high-performance, high-consistency mass production of NdFeB magnets.

Definition of NdFeB Magnet Orientation

The NdFeB magnet orientation refers to the process in which, during the pressing and forming stage, a strong magnetic field is applied to align the easy magnetization axes (c-axes) of the magnetic powder grains in a specific direction in an orderly manner. Orientation directly determines the upper limit of the magnet’s magnetic performance and the final magnetization direction.

Principle of NdFeB Magnet Orientation

NdFeB magnetic powder exhibits uniaxial anisotropy, meaning each grain has a specific “easy magnetization direction.” During forming, when the magnetic powder is placed in a strong magnetic field, the grains spontaneously rotate toward the magnetic field direction like compass needles, thereby producing an anisotropic magnet.

Directions of NdFeB Magnet Orientation

| Axial orientation: Alignment along the thickness direction (height direction) of the magnet, suitable for square plates, discs, cylinders, etc.; upon magnetization the magnetic force is concentrated at the two ends.

| Diametral orientation: Alignment along the radius direction of the magnet, suitable for rings, cylinders, etc.; upon magnetization the magnetic force is distributed over the surfaces of the inner and outer rings, suitable for radial magnetic-circuit designs.

| Radial orientation: The magnetic powder is aligned along the radial direction, enabling the magnetic ring to achieve optimal magnetic performance in the radial direction, suitable for precision magnetic rings in high-end servo motors, etc.

| Oblique orientation: According to a specific magnetic-circuit design, the magnetic powder is aligned along a specific inclined angle, suitable for irregular-shaped magnets or special operating conditions.

Functions of NdFeB Magnet Orientation

| Magnetic deflection angle: The orientation direction determines the optimal direction of easy magnetization of the magnet; the subsequent magnetization direction must strictly coincide with this direction to achieve optimal magnetic performance. Non-uniformity of the orientation magnetic field or mechanical forces during forming may cause slight deflection of grain alignment, resulting in a “magnetic deflection angle.” An excessively large deflection angle reduces the magnetic field strength at the orientation plane, affecting the magnetic field distribution and positioning accuracy of the magnet in precision equipment (such as servo motors).

| Structural uniformity: During forming, if the forming pressure is too high or the magnetic field strength is insufficient, the single-domain grain structure may be damaged or the grains may be misaligned, directly reducing the coercivity and temperature-stability of the magnet; a reasonable balance between orientation and pressure (such as cold isostatic pressing) can preserve grain integrity and improve structural uniformity.

| Magnetic performance: NdFeB magnetic powder exhibits anisotropy (single-domain grains have a specific easy magnetization axis, the c-axis). The orientation process applies a strong directional magnetic field, forcing the easy magnetization axes of the magnetic powder grains to align in an orderly manner along the magnetic field direction, thereby eliminating the disorderly cancellation of magnetic domains. The higher the degree of orientation, the better the remanence of the magnet in the orientation direction.
