NdFeB magnets are widely used in the packaging industry. The main role of magnets in magnetic gift boxes is for closure. In this article, we will explore the detailed information on the application of NdFeB magnets in magnetic gift boxes.

Selection of NdFeb Magnets

Performance | Considering the magnets’ size and magnetic force, NdFeB magnets, especially disc N35 magnets, are commonly used in magnetic gift boxes, and the magnetic performance can be referred to in the following table.

Neodymium Magnet (N35)
Diameter(mm)Thickness(mm)Center Magnetism(gauss)Maximum Magnetism(gauss)Magnetic Force(kg)
51170021370.279
61148619690.361
81116817090.535
10197415580.736
12183113300.905
15166810691.137
* The numbers shown are calculated based on N35 (Remanence=11,900 Gauss).
* Calculations are for reference only.

Size | Because the cardboard used in the magnetic gift box is usually thin, the magnet in the cardboard can not be too thick. The thickness of the magnet is equal to the thickness of the cardboard, for example, 2mm cardboard matches 2mm thick magnets. Moreover, magnets can not be too large, otherwise, it will affect the weight of the box. Common thicknesses of magnets are 1mm, 1.2mm, 1.5mm, 2mm.

Shape | Disc, square, and bar are the main shapes. Among them, disc magnets are the most common and the coating is mostly Ni-Cu-Ni.

Cost | Single-sided magnets and double-sided magnets are available. Although the magnetic properties of single-sided magnets are ordinary, single-sided magnets are cheap. That is why many gift box manufacturers choose single-sided magnets. Double-sided magnets have powerful magnetic force, but the price is more expensive, so double-sided is usually used in high-grade magnetic gift boxes.

Supplementary Knowledge:

Single-sided magnets design principle | A special treatment of galvanized iron sheet is wrapped on one side of the magnets, achieving the effect of stronger magnetic force on one side of the magnet and weaker magnetic force on the other side.

Manufacturer | Packaging magnets are in high demand, requiring suppliers to have sufficient production capacity to meet customers’ requirements.

The Specification and Quantity of NdFeB Magnets in Boxes

Generally, in order to make the outer box and inner box close together, a round iron sheet is added inside the outer box, and a disc neodymium magnet is in the corresponding position of the inner box. The selection of magnets can refer to the following table:

The Size of the Magnetic Gift Box and the Number of Magnets
Magnetic Gift Box-X (mm)Magnet-Diameter (mm) x Thickness (mm)Number of Magnet
X≤10010×11
100<X≤15010×1.52
150<X≤20010×22
200<X10×2> 2
*  X represents the length of the longest side of the gift box
