NdFeB Magnets vs Ferrite Magnets

NdFeB Magnets vs Ferrite Magnets is the main topic of the article. NdFeB magnets and ferrite magnets are widely used in many industries. We’ll analyze and compare their properties, such as composition, magnetic strength, price, etc.

NdFeB Magnets and Ferrite Magnets

Magnetic Strength

NdFeB Magnets vs Ferrite Magnets: Magnetic Strength

| NdFeB magnets are considered the strongest permanent magnets currently available in the market, earning the title “magnetic king.” Their maximum magnetic energy product can reach 52 MGOe, ten times that of ferrite magnets.

| Ferrite magnets have a maximum magnetic energy product of around 4.0 MGOe.

Composition

| NdFeB magnets are permanent magnetic materials composed of rare earth elements Neodymium (Nd), Iron (Fe), and non-metallic Boron (B). With their extremely high magnetic energy product and coercivity, they are among the strongest commercial permanent magnets available today.

| Ferrite magnets are magnetic ceramic magnets composed of metal iron (Fe) and other metallic elements (Manganese, Zinc, Nickel, Copper, Barium, Strontium, etc.). The main components are iron oxide (Fe2O3) or magnetite (Fe3O4). Ferrite magnets are manufactured through ceramic processes, resulting in hard but brittle materials.

Corrosion Resistance

NdFeB Magnets vs Ferrite Magnets: Corrosion Resistance

| Due to the high chemical reactivity of NdFeB magnet materials, they have poor corrosion resistance and must undergo surface treatment (for example, Ni-Cu-Ni coating) for use in humid or corrosive environments. Due to the coating, NdFeB magnets typically have a metallic luster.

| Ferrite magnets have good inherent corrosion resistance and don’t oxidize easily. They don’t require coating treatment. Therefore, ferrite magnets are typically black.

Machinability

| NdFeB magnets use metallurgical powder processes, making them more machinable than ferrite magnets. NdFeB magnets can achieve dimensional tolerances of ±0.05mm.

| Ferrite magnets use ceramic processes and are easily breakable. They can’t be used in applications requiring high pressure or bending stress. Due to difficult machining, most ferrite magnets have simple shapes and larger dimensional tolerances, typically ±0.1mm.

Temperature Stability

NdFeB Magnets vs Ferrite Magnets: Temperature Stability

| NdFeB magnets are sensitive to high temperatures and easily oxidize in humid environments. High temperatures reduce their magnetic properties. The Curie temperature of NdFeB magnets is between 320-380°C.

| Ferrite magnets have better high-temperature resistance with a Curie temperature of 450°C.

Besides Curie temperature, there’s also a maximum operating temperature, beyond which magnetic properties deteriorate rapidly and irreversibly, even after returning to room temperature.

NdFeB’s maximum operating temperature ranges from 80°C to 220°C. For temperatures above 200°C, Samarium Cobalt magnets are recommended. Ferrite magnets can operate at temperatures up to around 250°C.

NdFeB Magnets vs Ferrite Magnets: Applications

| NdFeB magnets are commonly used in applications requiring strong magnetic force, such as electric vehicles and wind power generation.

NdFeB magnets in 3C consumer electronics are another important application because they make product miniaturization possible. Using ferrite magnets would require much larger device sizes.

| Ferrite magnets are widely used in applications with lower magnetic requirements and cost sensitivity, such as speakers.

Both NdFeB and ferrite magnets have their advantages and disadvantages. The choice between them depends on specific application requirements, including required magnetic strength, environmental conditions, temperature performance, and budget.

Price

NdFeB Magnets vs Ferrite Magnets: Price

| NdFeB magnets are expensive due to their rare earth element content. Despite recent decreases in rare earth prices, NdFeB magnets remain nearly ten times more expensive than ferrite magnets.

| Low price and moderate performance are the main advantages of ferrite magnets, leading to their widespread use in many fields.

Both NdFeB and ferrite magnets have their advantages and disadvantages. The choice between them depends on specific application requirements, including required magnetic strength, environmental conditions, temperature performance, and budget.
