Neodymium magnets in drone motors are essential components of permanent magnet motors used in drones. The use of permanent magnet motors allows drones to fly further and more quietly.
Considering drones’ characteristics and the weight of systems like batteries and electronic controls, high power density, compact size, and lightweight permanent magnet synchronous motors are chosen for drone motors.
What is a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM)?
A permanent magnet synchronous motor is a type of alternating current synchronous motor, in which the magnetic field is generated by permanent magnets.

It contains a rotor and stator similar to an induction motor, but the rotor utilizes permanent magnets to generate the magnetic field, eliminating the need for field winding on the rotor. It is also referred to as a three-phase brushless permanent magnet sine wave motor.
Structure of PMSM Motors
| The stator of PMSM Motor: The stator winding is typically distributed across multiple slots to approximate sine distribution, generating a sinusoidal back electromotive force waveform.
| The rotor of PMSM Motor: The rotor lacks any magnetic field winding, so permanent magnets are used to create magnetic poles. The most widely used permanent magnets are neodymium-boron-iron (NdFeB).
Selection of Magnets for Drone Motors
| Type: When selecting magnets for drone motors, neodymium magnets are primarily considered due to their high magnetic energy. This provides a stronger magnetic field for the motor to operate at higher efficiency and performance.
| Shape: Rectangle magnets are commonly used due to their simple manufacturing process and reduced production costs, making them suitable for low-cost drones. For high-end drones with long flight ranges that require higher efficiency and performance, arc-shaped or specially shaped magnets are chosen to maintain a consistent air gap, thereby enhancing the overall performance of the motor.

| Temperature: Since drone motors generate heat during operation, selecting magnets that can withstand higher temperatures ensures stable motor operation in high-temperature environments. The N series of neodymium magnets can withstand temperatures up to 80°C, the H series can handle up to 120°C, and the SH series can endure temperatures above 150°C.
The Installation of Neodymium Magnets in Drone Motors
The cut and formed neodymium magnets are installed onto the rotor core or bracket according to the motor layout. During assembly, magnets are spaced with N-pole and S-pole intervals, and it is crucial to ensure the accuracy of the neodymium magnet placement. Appropriate fixing methods should be employed, such as adhesive bonding or mechanical fastening, to prevent the neodymium magnets in drone motors from loosening or displacement during motor operation.
