Outer Rotor Motors

Outer rotor motors are designed to meet certain specific technical requirements, where the stator of the motor is placed inside, and the rotor, equipped with permanent magnets, is positioned externally. This structural configuration is referred to as an outer rotor motor.

Definition of Outer Rotor Motor

Typically, the rotating part, embedded with magnets, is known as the rotor, while the stationary part, which contains the coil, is referred to as the stator. The outer rotor is static internally, while the external casing rotates. Usually, the embedded permanent magnet part rotates, and the coil part remains stationary. Hence, in an outer rotor motor, the rotor is on the outside, and the stator is on the innermost side. When the rotor rotates, the inside remains still while the outside turns.

Characteristics of Outer Rotor Motors

| Heat Dissipation Performance: The rotors of the outer rotor motors are positioned externally, providing a larger surface area in contact with air, which leads to excellent heat dissipation. During operation, heat can be dissipated more quickly into the surrounding environment, effectively lowering the motor temperature and reducing the risks of performance degradation and failure due to overheating, thereby extending the motor’s lifespan. This makes it suitable for continuous operation in devices requiring long running times.

| Rotational Inertia and Dynamic Response: The large radius of the rotor results in high rotational inertia (J = mr²), which leads to slower start and stop cycles, but smoother operation. This characteristic is suitable for applications requiring inertial maintenance, such as fans and hub motors.

| Size and Power Density: The compact structure of outer rotor motors allows the external rotor to be integrated into devices (such as hub motors), saving space while providing higher power density.

| Output Torque: For the same volume or mass, outer rotor motors offer higher output torque. In other words, when driving the same mixing system, the inner rotor structure of the permanent magnet motor requires significantly larger volume and weight compared to the outer rotor structure, especially in longitudinal dimensions.

| Cost-Effectiveness: The simpler structure of outer rotor motors, with fewer complicated internal transmission components, reduces failure points. Additionally, due to their good heat dissipation capabilities, these motors often have a longer lifespan, further lowering maintenance and replacement costs for the facility.

Role of Magnets in Outer Rotor Motors

| Influence on Motor Performance: The performance parameters of magnets, including flux density, hysteresis loss, and coercivity, have a significant impact on motor performance. For instance, magnets with high flux density can produce a stronger magnetic field in the motor, thereby enhancing output power and efficiency. Magnets with low hysteresis loss reduce energy loss during operation, improving the motor’s stability.

Role of Magnets in Outer Rotor Motors

| Determination of Motor Type: Depending on the type and installation method of the magnets, motors can be classified into various types, such as permanent magnet synchronous motors and brushless DC motors. Permanent magnet synchronous motors have permanent magnets installed on the rotor, operating at a frequency that matches that of the stator, and their speed remains constant with load changes. Brushless DC motors utilize electronic commutation technology, employing magnets as the rotor and coils as the stator, which offers advantages such as high efficiency, low energy consumption, and reduced noise.

Applications of Outer Rotor Motors

Applications of Outer Rotor Motors: Large Direct Drive Wind Turbines

| Large Direct-Drive Wind Turbines: Typically, outer rotor motors in these applications have 30 to 40 magnetic poles, with the stator having approximately 180 to 240 slots. The stator core is mounted on a stator bracket, which has a flange at one end for mounting to the nacelle’s base, while the other end is the outer rotor shaft, serving as the main shaft of the wind turbine. This shaft must bear the weight of the entire wind wheel and the outer rotor, necessitating high strength in both the shaft and the flange plate.

Applications of Outer Rotor Motors: Drones

| Drones: The rotor motors in drones commonly utilize outer rotor designs. The high torque characteristics of outer rotor motors can meet the demands for rotor drives during takeoff, hovering, and flight. Additionally, the compact and lightweight structure of outer rotor drone motors helps reduce the overall drone weight, improving flight performance and endurance.

Applications of Outer Rotor Motors: Electric Bicycles

| Electric Bicycles: Outer rotor motors can be directly mounted within the hubs of wheels, functioning as hub motors. This design makes the structure of electric bicycles more compact, reduces transmission components, lowers energy losses, and improves energy efficiency, while also providing substantial torque that aids in easier starting and climbing.
