Passive Magnetic Levitation Technology in Transportation

Passive magnetic levitation technology has broad application potential in transportation due to its energy-saving advantages.

Definition of Passive Magnetic Levitation Technology

Passive magnetic levitation technology is a technique that uses magnetic field forces to achieve object suspension without the need for a continuous external power supply or complex active control systems. It is based on the interaction forces between magnets (such as repulsion or attraction) or the magnetic response between magnets and specific materials (such as ferromagnetic materials, superconductors, etc.), enabling objects to levitate in a contactless state above a support surface or track.

Definition of Passive Magnetic Levitation Technology

Compared with active magnetic levitation technology, it eliminates complex components such as sensors, controllers, and actuators, reducing system complexity and maintenance costs.

Applications of Passive Magnetic Levitation Technology in Transportation

| Passive Maglev Trains: Unpowered coil loops are installed in the track, while permanent magnets are embedded at the bottom or sides of the train carriages. When the train moves, the relative motion between the permanent magnets and the coils induces an electric current in the coils according to the principle of electromagnetic induction. This current generates a magnetic field that interacts with the permanent magnets’ magnetic fields, producing an upward levitation force that suspends the train above the track.

No active power supply is required: Unlike conventional maglev technologies that require a continuous power supply to the track or carriages to maintain levitation, the levitation effect in passive maglev is naturally generated by the train’s motion, and the track does not need to be equipped with power stations or continuous power supply systems.

| Evacuated Tube Passive Maglev Trains (Conceptual Stage): The levitation principle is the same as that of passive maglev trains. The difference lies in the combination of passive magnetic levitation technology with an evacuated tube environment, utilizing the repulsive force of permanent magnets or superconducting magnets to achieve levitation while reducing air resistance in the vacuum environment. Theoretically, this enables ultra-high-speed operation (exceeding 1000 km/h).

Evacuated Tube Passive Maglev Trains

Currently in the conceptual research and experimental stage, with projects such as Hyperloop in the United States. Although not yet commercialized, it is regarded as a potential solution for future ultra-high-speed transportation, suitable for long-distance, point-to-point rapid transit.

Role of Magnets in Passive Magnetic Levitation Technology

| Generating Levitation Force: Based on the principle of repulsion between like poles of permanent magnets, permanent magnets installed at the bottom or specific positions of the train carriage interact with corresponding permanent magnets or magnetic structures arranged on the track, generating an upward repulsive force that counteracts the train’s gravity and achieves levitation. For example, in passive maglev systems such as Inductrack, the permanent magnets on the train interact with unpowered coil loops on the track, generating induced currents during motion that in turn produce repulsive forces to levitate the train.

| Providing Guidance Stability: Some passive maglev designs utilize the magnetic field distribution characteristics of magnets. By arranging the polarity and positions of the magnets appropriately, when the train deviates laterally or longitudinally from the center of the track, the magnetic field generates a restoring force that helps the train automatically return to a stable operating position, reducing lateral sway and deviation, thereby improving operational stability.
