The permanent magnet rotor is widely used across various fields due to its advantages, including high efficiency, high power density, and low losses.
Components of a Permanent Magnet Rotor
A permanent magnet rotor primarily consists of a rotor core, permanent magnets, a rotor shaft, and bearings. The rotor core is typically made of laminated silicon steel to form the magnetic circuit and reduce eddy-current losses; permanent magnets provide a constant magnetic field; the rotor shaft transmits torque, while bearings support the rotor’s rotation.

Principle of A Permanent Magnet Rotor
The permanent magnet rotor is made from permanent magnet materials (such as neodymium-iron-boron and ferrite) that have spontaneous magnetization properties and can create a constant magnetic field.

The permanent magnets form fixed magnetic poles (N and S poles) on the surface or inside the rotor. In a permanent magnet synchronous motor, when three-phase alternating current passes through the stator windings, it generates a rotating magnetic field that rotates at synchronous speed. According to the principle of “opposite poles attract, like poles repel,” the rotating magnetic field of the stator interacts with the magnetic field of the rotor’s permanent magnets to produce electromagnetic torque.
Position of Magnets in Permanent Magnet Rotors
| Surface-Mounted Permanent Magnet Rotor: Permanent magnets are directly mounted on the circumferential surface of the rotor core, with the magnetization direction typically radial. Advantages include simple structure, ease of manufacture and assembly, low cost, small moment of inertia suitable for applications requiring rapid start-stop, strong weak magnetic capability, easy adjustment of air gap magnetic field, and good high-speed performance.
| Surface-Embedded Permanent Magnet Rotor: Permanent magnets are embedded in the surface of the rotor core, flush or slightly below the surface. Advantages include magnets protected by the core, higher mechanical strength, better stability during high-speed operation, and a more flexible magnetic circuit design that optimizes flux distribution.

| Built-in Permanent Magnet Rotor: Permanent magnets are completely embedded within the rotor core, with slots in the core for mounting the magnets. Advantages include magnets protected by the core, strong resistance to centrifugal forces, suitability for high-speed operation, flexible magnetic circuit design allowing optimization by adjusting magnet shape, position, and quantity, improving torque density and efficiency, and better weak magnetic acceleration capability to widen the motor’s constant power operation range.
Applications of Permanent Magnet Rotors
| New Energy Vehicles: As a core component of drive motors, permanent magnet rotors can achieve high power density and a wide speed control range to meet the requirements for high-speed cruising, acceleration, and energy recovery in electric vehicles.

| Wind Power Generation: Permanent magnet synchronous generators use permanent magnet rotors to directly drive blades, reducing mechanical losses and maintenance costs while improving power generation efficiency, especially suitable for small to medium-sized wind power systems.
