Permanent magnets and permanent magnet motors are the topic of this article. We will discuss them in detail.
Selection of Permanent Magnets
When selecting permanent magnet materials, key properties to evaluate include high coercivity, high remanence, and high magnetic energy product. Strong coercivity ensures that the permanent magnet can maintain its magnetism under the interference of external magnetic fields, preventing demagnetization.

For example, neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) materials can achieve coercivity in the thousands of Oersted (Oe). The level of remanence determines the magnetic field strength a permanent magnet can provide after magnetization. In contrast, the magnetic energy product indicates the material’s efficiency in storing magnetic energy. These characteristics directly influence the performance of permanent magnet motors.
Comparison of Various Permanent Magnets
Neodymium magnets, as the most widely used rare-earth permanent magnet material, are renowned for their exceptionally high magnetic energy product, which generates strong magnetic fields in compact spaces. However, this material has weak corrosion resistance, and its performance may degrade under high temperatures, necessitating surface treatments or additional protective measures.

Samarium-cobalt (SmCo) magnets are favored for their superior heat and corrosion resistance, although their magnetic energy product is lower than that of neodymium, and they tend to be more expensive. SmCo magnets play a crucial role in aerospace applications where temperature stability is essential.
Ferrite permanent magnet materials, such as barium ferrite and strontium ferrite, are preferred for their low cost and good chemical stability.
Design of Permanent Magnet Motors
Choosing the Type of Motor

Selecting the right type of permanent magnet motor based on specific application requirements is critical, such as permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) and permanent magnet direct current motors (PMDC). PMSMs occupy an important position in industries such as industrial automation and new energy vehicles due to their high efficiency and high power factor, with the rotor magnetic field synchronized with the stator rotating magnetic field.
PMDC motors are commonly used in small electric tools and other equipment because of their simple structure and ease of control.
Magnetic Field Analysis and Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
Using finite element analysis software to accurately simulate the magnetic field distribution of permanent magnet motors is an effective method. By constructing a geometric model of the motor and setting material properties, the magnetic field strength and magnetic flux density in various operating states can be calculated. This helps optimize the shape, size, and position of the permanent magnets to achieve an ideal magnetic field distribution, thereby enhancing the overall performance of the motor.

Layout and Shape Design of Permanent Magnets
| Surface-mounted permanent magnets: In surface-mounted permanent motors, the magnets are installed directly on the surface of the rotor. This layout is structurally simple and easy to manufacture, but has relatively lower magnet utilization. Parameters such as the thickness and width of the permanent magnets must be considered in the design to achieve an optimal balance between motor performance and cost.

| Embedded permanent magnets: These magnets are embedded within the rotor and can adopt various structures, like radial or tangential layouts. This configuration improves magnet utilization, enhances the magnetic field strength, and increases the torque density of the motor. For instance, in a tangentially mounted embedded permanent motor, the magnetic fields of adjacent permanent magnets can superimpose, effectively increasing the magnetic flux density in the air gap.
Manufacturing Processes for Permanent Magnet Motors
| Rotor: The processing of permanent magnets includes cutting and shaping. For block permanent magnet materials, precise cutting and shaping according to designs is a crucial step in the manufacturing process. High-precision cutting machines, such as wire EDM machines, are used to shape the permanent magnet materials into the required forms and sizes.
Some permanent magnet materials require surface treatment to enhance their performance. For neodymium magnets, common surface treatment techniques include zinc plating and nickel plating. These treatments not only improve the corrosion resistance of the magnets but also enhance their bonding performance with other components of the motor.
The cut and shaped permanent magnets are mounted onto the rotor core or bracket. During assembly, the precision of the magnet’s position must be ensured, using appropriate fixation methods, such as adhesive bonding or mechanical fixing, to prevent the magnets from loosening or displacing during motor operation. Additionally, dynamic balancing of the rotor is required to reduce vibration during motor operation.

| Stator: The stator core is typically made of stacked silicon steel sheets, which helps reduce eddy current losses. During the manufacturing process, the quality of the stacking of silicon steel sheets must be ensured, assembling them into the stator core using techniques like stamping and riveting. The stator windings are installed in the stator core slots through winding and downline processes, with particular attention to the insulation and connection quality of the windings.
Testing Motor Performance
| No-load test: By conducting a no-load test on the permanent magnet motor, various parameters such as speed, current, and voltage under no-load conditions can be measured. This helps calculate no-load losses and no-load current to assess the mechanical performance and rationality of the magnetic circuit design.
| Load test: In the load test, different load torques are applied to the motor, measuring output power, efficiency, and torque. Analyzing load test data allows for understanding the motor’s performance in real working conditions and identifying potential issues such as torque fluctuations and efficiency drops.
| Optimization based on test results: Based on performance test data, the design and manufacturing processes of the permanent magnet motor can be optimized. For example, if low efficiency is detected, the efficiency can be improved by adjusting the shape of the permanent magnets, optimizing the field distribution, or enhancing the motor’s cooling structure.
