Compared to magnetic rods, plate magnets have a larger contact surface and stronger magnetism, resulting in better capture of ferrous materials. When materials pass through, ferrous substances are removed from the material. Magnetic plate filters are now widely used in machinery and food processing industries.
Principle of Permanent Magnetic Separators
Permanent magnetic separators utilize the properties of plate magnets to generate magnetic fields. Permanent magnets maintain a certain magnetic field strength for long periods and permanent magnetic separators usually consist of multiple plate magnets arranged in a specific layout to form a regular magnetic field area.
In magnetic separators, ferromagnetic materials enter the area of the separator via transport equipment. When ferromagnetic materials are in the magnetic field area, they are attracted to the plate magnets due to magnetic force.
Permanent magnetic separators have advantages such as stable magnetic fields and ease of use.
Types of Plate Magnets
Standard Plate Magnets
Standard plate magnets mainly include flat plate magnets and wedge-shaped plate magnets. The flat plate magnets don’t have a zone to block the ferrous materials, increasing the risk of captured ferrous materials being washed away by materials. Another kind of standard plate magnet includes a wedge-shaped protrusion that better captures ferrous materials, making them more effective for use in food factories.

Plate Magnets in Hump Magnetic Separators
Hump magnetic separators are used in closed production lines to remove ferrous materials from gravity-flow or pneumatically conveyed materials.

A hump magnetic separator consists of two plate magnets and a carbon steel or stainless steel housing. The two magnets are configured on both sides of a V-shaped chute, ensuring full contact between the plate surface and the material to enhance iron removal.
When the material enters the hump magnetic separator, it falls onto the first plate magnet, changing direction before contacting the second plate to enhance iron removal. The slope of the hump magnetic separator chute should not exceed 45° relative to the vertical direction.
| Width | Height | Shell Material | Operating Temp. | Magnet | Magnet Size | Magnetic Field Strength |
| 250mm | 224mm | 304 stainless steel | 60°C | N35 | 230x204x55mm | 5000 Gauss (±10%) |

Plate Magnet Housing
In plate magnet housings, the magnets are installed on the housing with hinges for easy disassembly and cleaning. A wedge-shaped baffle at the inlet prevents material blockage. It can even break up accumulated material, guiding the material flow to the magnets on both sides, which aids in thoroughly separating iron impurities.
