Proper Handling and Placement of Neodymium Magnets

Proper handling of neodymium magnets is essential not only to avoid injury but also to maintain the performance of the magnets and ensure their normal use.

Reasons for Proper Handling of Neodymium Magnets

| Brittle Material Prone to Fracture: Neodymium-iron-boron magnets are made from a hard and brittle alloy, making them susceptible to cracking or breaking when subjected to collisions, drops, or impacts. Sharp fragments produced from breaking can fly off at high speeds, posing a safety risk, such as cutting the skin.

| Impact on Magnetic Performance: Improper handling, such as violent shaking or exposure to high temperatures, can damage the internal crystal structure of the magnets, leading to a decrease in magnetic performance or demagnetization, affecting their effectiveness during use.

| Strong Magnetic Force Leading to Pinching: Neodymium-iron-boron magnets possess a very strong magnetic force. When two magnets or a magnet and a ferromagnetic object are brought close together, they can create a sudden and powerful attractive force, which may pinch fingers, palms, or other body parts, resulting in severe injuries—this risk is particularly high with larger-sized magnets.

Procedure for Proper Handling of Neodymium Magnets

| Preparation: For the safety of the operator, if handling large or high-strength magnets, it is necessary to wear protective equipment, such as safety goggles and gloves, to prevent injury from flying fragments. Ensure that the working area around the magnets is clean, flat, and free of debris, iron filings, or other foreign materials to avoid accidental attachment or collision.

| Retrieving the Magnets: When retrieving magnets, especially when multiple magnets are involved, first observe their attraction to one another. If the magnets are attracting each other, hold the edges of the adjacent magnets with both hands and slowly separate them from the edges simultaneously, avoiding collisions due to attraction. Once separated, place the retrieved magnets individually to prevent contact with other magnets or ferromagnetic objects, thereby avoiding re-accumulation.

| Placing the Magnets: If placing neodymium-iron-boron magnets alone, position them on a flat, dry surface, avoiding stacking or compressing them to prevent breakage due to excessive pressure. When placing multiple magnets, use non-magnetic materials (such as plastic sheets, wooden pieces, or cardboard) to separate them, preventing mutual attraction or collisions.

| Final Checks: Inspect the surfaces of the magnets for any damage, cracks, or fragments. If damage is found, handle it promptly and appropriately to avoid injury from sharp pieces. Store the magnets in a dry, well-ventilated, temperature-controlled environment, wrapping or separating them with non-magnetic materials to prevent oxidation or demagnetization.
