SmCo Magnets in High-Temperature Motors

SmCo magnets, with their high-temperature stability, high magnetic performance, and corrosion resistance, are indispensable materials in the field of high-temperature motors, especially in high-end, high-reliability applications.

Material Characteristics of SmCo Magnets

| High-Temperature Stability: SmCo magnets (especially the 2:17 type) can operate at temperatures up to 350°C–550°C, with the temperatures exceeding 800°C. They exhibit minimal magnetic performance degradation at elevated temperatures, maintaining a stable magnetic field output.

Material Characteristics of SmCo Magnets

| Low Temperature Coefficient: The reversible temperature coefficient of remanence is approximately -0.035%/°C, and the temperature coefficient of intrinsic coercivity is superior to that of NdFeB magnets, providing strong resistance to demagnetization at high temperatures.

| Corrosion Resistance: With low iron content, SmCo magnets are not prone to oxidation. They can withstand humid, acidic, and alkaline environments without complex coatings, making them suitable for harsh operating conditions.

Advantages of SmCo Magnets in High-Temperature Motors

| Excellent High-Temperature Stability: SmCo magnets have an operating temperature range of up to 350°C or even higher (some special materials can reach 550°C). At high temperatures, their magnetic performance degrades very little, allowing them to maintain a stable magnetic field output over long periods, ensuring the motor continues to operate efficiently under high-temperature conditions. In contrast, conventional NdFeB magnets tend to demagnetize significantly above 180°C.

| Low Temperature Coefficient: The reversible temperature coefficient of remanence (αBr) of SmCo magnets is approximately -0.035%/°C, and some special formulations can achieve a temperature coefficient close to 0%/°C. This means that magnetic performance fluctuates very little with temperature changes, which helps maintain the stability of the motor’s output torque and efficiency, making SmCo magnets suitable for high-temperature motor applications that demand high magnetic field precision.

| High Coercivity and Demagnetization Resistance: SmCo magnets possess very high coercivity (Hcj), effectively resisting demagnetization effects caused by high temperatures and strong magnetic fields. Even under high-temperature, high-load conditions, the magnets remain undemagnetized, ensuring reliable high-temperature motor operation.

Advantages of SmCo Magnets in High-Temperature Motors

| Excellent Corrosion Resistance: SmCo magnets inherently have strong corrosion and oxidation resistance. They can be used for long periods in high-temperature, humid, or corrosive environments without the need for additional electroplating or coating protection, reducing motor maintenance costs and improving the system reliability.

| High Magnetic Energy Product: The maximum energy product of 2:17-type SmCo magnets can reach 35 MGOe, providing a strong magnetic field within a small volume. This helps increase the power density and efficiency of the motor, meeting the demands for high torque and high power output in high-temperature motors.

Limitations of SmCo Magnets in High-Temperature Motors

| Mechanical Strength and Brittleness: SmCo magnet materials are relatively brittle. The coefficient of thermal expansion of SmCo magnets differs from that of other high-temperature motor components at high temperatures, which can easily generate thermal stress and lead to cracking or fragmentation of the magnets, especially during frequent motor start-stop cycles or under mechanical shock.

| Cost and Processing Difficulty: The raw materials (samarium, cobalt) for SmCo magnets are expensive, and the processing is complex, requiring special techniques to ensure magnet precision and performance, thereby increasing the overall cost of the motor.
