Soft Ferrites

Soft ferrites are characterized by high magnetic permeability, low losses, and good high-frequency performance, enabling stable operation within a frequency range from kHz to MHz, meeting the demands for high-frequency and miniaturized electronic devices.

Compared to metal soft magnetic materials, soft ferrites have high resistivity and low eddy current losses, providing significant advantages in high-frequency applications, making them essential basic materials in modern electronics.

Definition of Soft Ferrites

This includes single-component or multi-component types such as manganese ferrite (MnO·Fe₂O₃), zinc ferrite (ZnO·Fe₂O₃), nickel-zinc ferrite (Ni-Zn·Fe₂O₄), and manganese magnesium zinc ferrite (Mn-Mg-Zn·Fe₂O₄). Their resistivity is much higher than that of metallic magnetic materials, and they exhibit outstanding dielectric properties. Consequently, composite ferrite magnetic materials integrating ferromagnetism with ferroelectric or piezoelectric properties have emerged.

Definition of Soft Ferrites

Advantages of Soft Ferrites

| Low Eddy Current Loss: Due to their high resistivity, eddy current losses are minimal. Even at hundreds of MHz high frequencies, soft ferrites can maintain low loss levels, making them suitable for high-frequency circuits and devices.

| High Magnetic Permeability: The magnetic permeability of soft ferrites is significantly higher than that of metal magnetic materials (such as iron-nickel alloys and aluminum-silicon iron alloys), effectively enhancing the magnetic field and enabling efficient electromagnetic induction and energy transfer. They are suitable for applications, and the manufacture of magnetic components such as inductors and transformers across frequency ranges from several kHz to hundreds of MHz.

attelements

| Lower Cost: The abundance of raw materials and relatively simple manufacturing processes prepare soft ferrites similar to ceramic production, involving a straightforward process that doesn’t require substantial quantities of precious metals, thus keeping costs low and suitable for large-scale production and application. Soft ferrites will continue to occupy substantial cost-sensitive markets below 1 MHz, upgrading toward high-frequency and low-power applications.

Disadvantages of Soft Ferrites

| Low Saturation Flux Density: The soft magnetic materials typically have a saturation flux density that is only 1/3 to 1/5 that of pure iron, resulting in limited magnetic energy storage per unit volume. Therefore, they are less suitable for low-frequency, high-electricity, and high-power fields that require high magnetic energy density and are more tailored for high-frequency, low-power, weak electric applications.

| Brittle Mechanical Properties: As ceramic materials, soft ferrites are hard and brittle, with relatively low mechanical strength. They can easily crack, chip, or break under impact, vibration, or stress, necessitating high operational requirements during processing, transport, and use.

| Difficult Processing: Due to their brittleness and hardness, soft ferrites are not well-suited for conventional mechanical cutting. If precision machining is required after sintering, only expensive and less efficient grinding or diamond tools can be used for cutting, increasing manufacturing costs and complexity.

Applications of Soft Ferrites

| Variable Frequency Drives and Inverters: Used to control motor speed and power, soft ferrites can improve the efficiency and reliability of devices, widely applied in equipment such as machine tools and fans.

| Magnetic Shielding Materials: Used to shield the electromagnetic fields around electronic devices, preventing signal leakage and interference, commonly found in computers, communication devices, and aerospace equipment.

| Wind Power Generation Equipment: In the converters and control systems of wind turbines, they are utilized to achieve energy conversion and control, adapting to complex operating environments.
