Tengye’s Neodymium Magnet Testing

Neodymium magnet testing is an essential method for ensuring product quality and maintaining the brand reputation of NdFeB magnet manufacturers. It plays an irreplaceable role in the healthy development of companies. Tengye has strict requirements for testing NdFeB magnets.

Importance of Neodymium Magnet Testing

The importance of neodymium magnet testing is multifaceted, primarily reflected in the following key areas:

| Ensuring Product Quality and Performance: NdFeB magnets are widely utilized in various fields, including electronics, renewable energy, aerospace, and others. Their magnetic performance (such as coercivity and magnetic moment) directly affects the performance and stability of devices. Testing ensures that magnets meet design requirements, preventing device failures or efficiency declines due to suboptimal magnetic performance.

Importance of Neodymium Magnet Testing

| Meeting Export Compliance Requirements: If NdFeB magnets contain regulated rare earth elements (such as terbium and dysprosium), exporting them requires providing a third-party testing report.  Testing can accurately identify element concentrations, ensuring compliance with regulations and minimizing trade risks for enterprises.

| Controlling Production Processes and Costs: Neodymium magnet testings help monitor production stages and promptly detect issues such as raw material impurities and process defects. For instance, composition analysis can adjust formulas to optimize magnetic performance, while testing microstructures can improve sintering processes, increasing product yield and reducing production costs.

Types of Neodymium Magnet Testing

Tengye’s neodymium magnet testing primarily includes:

Appearance and Dimension Testing

Tools such as optical sorters, drum sorting machines, projectors, micrometers, and calipers are used to measure the dimensions of magnets, with measurements taken in millimeters (mm) and varying degrees of precision. CCD optical sorters can also be configured to inspect product appearance and color using different parameters.

Magnetic Performance Testing

Key magnetic performance parameters include remanence (Br), coercivity (Hcb/Hcj), and maximum magnetic energy product ((BH)max). The pulsed magnetic field method (B-H curve mapping) is used to determine magnetic performance. This method accurately plots the hysteresis loop, providing magnetic performance parameters and evaluating magnet behavior under different magnetic field conditions.

Chemical Composition Analysis

Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) can precisely analyze the ratios of main elements (Nd, Fe, B). Combined with X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF), it provides rapid qualitative and semi-quantitative analysis of elemental composition and detects impurity elements (such as O, C, Co), ensuring that compositions meet standards and quality requirements.

Physical Performance Testing

| Physical Properties Testing: The Archimedes drainage method (accuracy ±0.01g/cm³) is used to measure density; a Vickers hardness tester measures Vickers hardness (HV); and a surface roughness measuring instrument determines surface roughness.

| Drop Test: Products are bonded in the center of a metal plate or container using specialized anaerobic glue. After bonding, the product, placed under a simulated weight (100 ± 10g), should not touch any part of the drop test tool. After two hours, the weighted product is dropped from a height of 1.5 meters (1.8 meters similarly), repeating this drop multiple times. If there is no coating loss after dropping, the product is deemed qualified.

Microstructure Characterization

Microstructure testing uses Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM-EDS) to observe grain size distribution and Nd-rich phase morphology. It combines Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) to analyze crystal orientation and texture, and can utilize Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM) for clearer microimages.

Environmental Tolerance Testing

| Tests measuring temperature coefficient (αBr) assess how temperature impacts remanence; damp heat cycling tests simulate high-temperature, high-humidity environments.

| Salt spray corrosion tests evaluate corrosion resistance in artificial salt mist conditions, divided into neutral and acidic types. The neutral salt spray test for NdFeB follows national standards with continuous spraying conditions of 35°C ± 2°C and 5% ± 1% NaCl solution (weight fraction), with a pH of the deposited solution between 6.5 and 7.2. The tests may last for 24, 48, or 72 hours, depending on product requirements. Successful results in darkened or blackened coatings, while yellow rust, bubbling, cracking, peeling, or powdery phenomena indicate failure.

| Compliance Requirements: Different countries and regions have strict regulations and standards for imported magnetic materials. For example, the EU’s REACH Regulation stipulates registration, evaluation, authorization, and restriction of chemicals. Testing chemical composition ensures that NdFeB magnets comply with limits on harmful substances; U.S. tariff policies may also establish different tariff rates based on the chemical composition of magnets, so companies must accurately test for components to manage costs efficiently.

| Material Certification Requirements: Importers need to verify that the ratios of rare earth elements (such as Nd, Dy, and Tb) and other major elements in the magnets align with declared values. Only through composition testing and certification can the reliability of product quality be established, meeting the procurement standards of importers and the production requirements of end products.

| Environmental Considerations: Neodymium magnet testing for restricted substances, such as the radioactive element thorium (Th), reflects responsibility for environmental protection and user health. It ensures that exported NdFeB magnets do not pose dangers to the environment or human health during production and disposal processes.
