The Effect of Conductive Coatings on Eddy Currents in NdFeB Magnets

NdFeB magnets themselves have relatively high electrical conductivity and, in the alternating magnetic fields of rotating machinery such as electric motors, generate significant eddy current losses, which can cause the magnets to heat up or even undergo thermal demagnetization. Conductive coatings also have an impact on eddy currents in NdFeB magnets.

The Meaning of Conductive Coatings for NdFeB

A conductive coating for NdFeB refers to a coating with good electrical conductivity applied to the surface of a NdFeB permanent magnet. Its core significance lies in meeting the basic surface protection requirements of NdFeB (anti-corrosion and anti-oxidation) while simultaneously imparting electrical conductivity to the magnet, so as to satisfy electrical performance requirements in specific industrial applications.

The Meaning of Conductive Coatings for NdFeB

For example, coatings with high electrical conductivity generate eddy currents under alternating magnetic fields, which may increase the eddy current losses of the magnet and lead to a decline in magnetic performance. Therefore, the application of conductive coatings must involve a trade-off based on the specific conditions.

The Meaning of Eddy Currents in NdFeB Magnets

Eddy currents in NdFeB magnets refer to the energy losses caused when a NdFeB permanent magnet, placed in an alternating magnetic field, generates eddy currents through electromagnetic induction that are subsequently converted into heat. Eddy current losses are converted into thermal energy, causing localized heating of the magnet and the motor, resulting in energy loss and reducing the overall operating efficiency of the motor.

The Effect of Conductive Coatings on Eddy Currents in NdFeB

| Blocking the Eddy Current Loop: Conductive coatings can divide the NdFeB magnet steel radially or circumferentially into multiple segmented small magnetic pieces, with insulating adhesive layers applied between the pieces to cut off the large eddy current loop, splitting the large eddy current into multiple elongated small eddy currents. According to the relationship in which eddy current loss is proportional to the square of the loop’s characteristic width, when the loop width is halved, the eddy current loss can be reduced to one-quarter of its original value.

| Altering the Equivalent Resistance: The coating (adhesive layer) provides continuous, controllable electrical isolation, replacing the “contact resistance” between magnet steel segments—which drifts with assembly preload, thermal cycling, and vibration—with a stable, controllable “interface resistance,” thereby preventing localized conductive bridging (such as metal debris or burrs piercing through) from re-forming eddy current loops and ensuring that the segmented eddy current reduction effect is realized.

| Improving Bulk Resistance: Certain surface coatings (such as Al₂O₃, SiO₂) or conductive coatings (such as specific metallic platings) alter the conductive characteristics of the magnet steel’s surface or interface, thereby changing the local equivalent resistance of the magnet steel and suppressing the generation of eddy currents.ChatGPT Image

| Optimizing Heat Dissipation and the Magnetic Circuit: A thicker coating is not necessarily better. An excessively thick coating introduces thermal resistance and magnetic reluctance, and a thick adhesive layer is prone to adhesive voids and localized contact that causes localized conduction. The ideal coating should be “thin and uniform” to ensure electrical isolation without compromising heat dissipation and the magnetic circuit.
