Magnetic couplings are one of the important applications of permanent magnets. Today, we will comprehensively introduce the knowledge of magnetic couplings. This article mainly discusses synchronous magnetic couplings, and future articles will cover other couplings.
What Is A Coupling?
A coupling is an important component in a mechanical transmission that transmits torque by connecting the driving shaft and the driven shaft. Traditional couplings are contact-type and have relatively complex structures. During daily operation, wear can occur, and if there is an overload condition, it can cause significant wear on other mechanical components, which is very detrimental to the stability of the mechanical operation equipment.
What Are Magnetic Couplings?
They are a type of non-contact coupling, generally composed of two magnets with an isolation cover separating them. The inner magnet connects to the driving component, while the outer magnet connects to the motors, transmitting torque through the coupling action of the magnetic fields of the N and S poles.

Magnetic couplings employ an innovative principle of magnetic coupling to transfer force and torque between the driving and driven shafts without direct contact. Therefore, they are widely used in situations that have special requirements.
Advantages of Magnetic Couplings
| Non-Contact Transmission: Magnetic couplings use magnetic coupling principles to achieve non-contact transmission of force. This method avoids the physical contact used by traditional mechanical couplings through bearings and gears to transmit power and torque, thus reducing wear and extending the lifespan of the equipment.
| Increased Transmission Efficiency: Compared to traditional couplings, magnetic couplings transmit torque via magnetic forces, reducing energy loss and friction, thereby increasing transmission efficiency. This makes magnetic couplings widely applicable in transmission systems, such as wind power generation units.

| Solving Leakage Issues: The development of magnetic couplings was initially aimed at addressing leakage problems during the conveying process. They completely seal the inner rotor and driven components within the housing through an isolation sleeve, effectively resolving leakage issues. This feature makes them particularly suitable for applications with special leakage requirements.
Kinds of Synchronous Magnetic Couplings
Common magnetic transmissions include synchronous transmission, hysteresis transmission, and eddy current transmission types, each with its unique characteristics and applications in different fields.
Magnetic Disc Couplings
Magnetic disc couplings typically consist of two permanent magnets, which are installed at the driving end and the driven end, respectively. When the permanent magnet at the driving end rotates, its generated magnetic field interacts with the magnetic field of the permanent magnet at the driven end.

Due to the magnetic characteristics of the permanent magnets (like poles repel, unlike poles attract), this interaction produces a force that pushes the driven end’s permanent magnet, thereby driving it to rotate along with the driving end, facilitating power transmission.
Coaxial Magnetic Couplings
The main components of coaxial magnetic couplings are the inner rotor, outer rotor, and isolation sleeve. Magnets are installed on the outer circumference of the inner rotor and the inner circumference of the outer rotor, arranged in an alternating N/S pattern. With a coaxial installation, automatic coupling occurs. An isolation sleeve is installed between the inner and outer rotors, allowing them to be separated and enclosed independently.

Permanent Magnets in Magnetic Couplings
| Ferrite Magnets: Initially, magnetic couplings used ferrite magnets, but due to their lower magnetic performance, they could only transmit small torques given the same volume as traditional couplings.
| Samarium Cobalt & Alnico Magnets: Samarium-cobalt magnets and Alnico magnets have better magnetic performance and transmit larger torques. However, the price of samarium cobalt and Alnico is high, which increases the cost of magnetic couplings.
| NdFeB Magnets: NdFeB magnets have many advantages, such as a high BHmax, good processing properties, and high yield rates. They not only reduce the size of magnetic couplings but also improve their effectiveness, making them widely used in magnetic couplings.
Factors Affecting the Performance of Magnetic Couplings
| Temperature: Magnets are prone to demagnetization in high-temperature environments. High temperatures can destroy the ordered arrangement within the magnetic field, leading to a disordered magnetic field.
| Vibration and Shock Effects: Magnets may also demagnetize during high-frequency vibrations or shocks. This is because intense vibrations and shocks can disrupt the ordered arrangement within the magnetic field, leading to disordered conditions and causing demagnetization.
| Eddy Current: During operation, the isolation sleeve rotating between the inner and outer rotors of the permanent magnetic coupling cuts through magnetic field lines. As the isolation sleeve is mostly made of metal materials, it is prone to inducing eddy currents, forming closed loops on the surface of the isolation sleeve, which generates eddy current losses.
Optimization of Magnetic Couplings’ Performance
| Magnet Arrangements: For the eddy current losses in permanent magnetic couplings, various methods such as numerical simulations and theoretical calculations can be used to compute the eddy current losses generated by different magnetic arrangements, such as tightly interleaved rows and parallel rows. Engineers could choose the best magnet arrangements.

| Equipment Matching: Permanent magnetic couplings must match the performance characteristics of the devices they are applied to. For example, when applied to a conveyor belt, it requires an overload protection function. If a permanent magnetic coupling without automatic overload protection is selected, it can easily generate high temperatures due to overload.
Applications of Magnetic Couplings
| Chemical Industry: Liquids in the chemical industry often possess corrosive or valuable characteristics. Using magnetic couplings can prevent pollution or resource waste caused by leakage.
| Biological and Pharmaceutical Industry: These industries require the assurance of purity and hygiene for the media. The sealing function of magnetic couplings effectively prevents external contamination.
