Where does the energy of magnets come from? Why doesn’t the energy of magnets decrease even after prolonged use? Today, we will discuss the mysterious energy behind magnets.
Source of Energy of Magnets
The key to a magnet’s ability to continuously exert magnetic force is not that it stores some kind of consumable energy internally, but rather it is closely related to the magnetization process that occurs during its manufacturing.
The magnetization process is essentially the rearrangement of the internal magnetic domains of a material by an external magnetic field. Specifically, when the material is placed in a strong external magnetic field, the field exerts force on the material, overcoming its internal resistance and forcing the initially chaotic magnetic domains to align in a single direction. This process requires substantial external energy.

Once magnetization is complete, the uniform arrangement of the internal magnetic domains forms a lower energy, more stable structural state known as a “low-energy stable state.” This stable structure inside the magnet is the source of the magnetic field, which itself is not consumed or weakened by use or by attracting other objects.

The ability of a magnet to maintain this stable structure over time relies primarily on two key characteristics:
| High Coercivity: Coercivity is the ability of a magnetic material to resist the influence of an external opposing magnetic field. The higher the coercivity, the more difficult it is for external interference to disturb the internal magnetic domains.
| Magnetic Anisotropy: The tendency of a material to exhibit specific directions of magnetization (known as easy magnetization axes). When the magnetic moments are arranged along this direction, the energy is at its lowest. Deviating from this direction requires higher energy; hence, the material tends to maintain its magnetic moments along the easy magnetization axis.

These two characteristics together create a significant energy barrier that keeps the magnetic domains stably ordered, preventing spontaneous return to a disordered state.
Why Does the Energy of Magnets not Change When They Attract Other Objects?
Why do permanent magnets attract objects without consuming the energy of magnets?
The answer lies in the fact that magnets do not store energy; they provide a stable magnetic field. The magnetic field imparts potential energy to a nearby piece of iron. As the iron approaches the magnet, the potential energy of magnets is converted into kinetic energy, completing work, while the magnet’s internal structure and energy state remain unchanged.

The role of the magnet in this process is similar to that of the Earth’s gravitational field. When an apple falls from a tree, the Earth itself does not consume energy; instead, the gravitational potential energy of the apple’s initial system converts into kinetic energy. Similarly, when a magnet attracts a piece of iron, the system’s magnetic potential energy decreases, transforming into the kinetic energy of the iron, while the structure and energy state of the magnet itself do not change.

If we separate the magnet from the iron nail again, we need to supply external energy to the system to elevate the magnetic potential energy between the nail and the magnet. This energy input does not “replenish” the magnet’s energy, but rather restores the system to its initial high potential energy state.
