The Role of Electric Motor Magnets and Abnormal Situations

Electric motor magnets are a crucial component of electric motors, directly impacting the motor’s performance. Additionally, the design of the motor must fully consider the characteristics of the magnets.

What Are Electric Motor Magnets

What Are Electric Motor Magnets

First, we need to understand what electric motor magnets are.

Electric motor magnets refer to the magnetic materials responsible for generating magnetic force within the motor. There are various types of electric motor magnets, commonly including permanent magnets and electromagnets.

Generate Magnetic Field

Roles of Electric Motor Magnets: Generate Magnetic Field

The primary function of electric motor magnets is to generate a magnetic field. The magnetic field is a necessary condition for the normal operation of the motor, allowing the conversion of electrical energy into mechanical energy, enabling motor operation. The size and direction of the magnetic field directly influence the motor’s output power and efficiency.

When current flows through the stator of the motor, the magnetic field produced by the electromagnet causes the motor magnets to generate a magnetic field within the magnetic circuit. By changing the current’s direction and magnitude, the magnetic field’s size and direction can be adjusted, thus controlling the motor’s speed and output power.

Stabilize Motor Operation

During the operation of the motor, the magnetic field generated by the motor magnets not only produces torque but also stabilizes the motor’s operation. When the motor is working, the magnetic field of the motor magnets can resist external interference, ensuring that the motor’s speed and output power are not affected by external factors.

Improve Motor Efficiency

Factors such as the quality, shape, and installation position of the motor magnets can impact the motor’s efficiency. Therefore, in the design and manufacture of the motor, meticulous control is necessary regarding the materials and manufacturing processes of the motor magnets to enhance efficiency and performance.

Abnormal Situations of Electric Motor Magnets

Magnet Omission:

Magnet omission refers to the failure to install the necessary magnetic steel in the stator or rotor, leading to a missing magnetic field distribution. If magnets are omitted from the motor, it will result in insufficient magnetic field strength and an imbalanced distribution, causing control performance failure. This manifests as reduced output power and efficiency, and in severe cases, it may prevent the motor from functioning correctly.

Incorrect Magnet Installation

Incorrect magnet installation refers to the N and S pole orientations of the magnetic steel being opposite to the design requirements, resulting in reversed magnetic field polarity. If the magnets are installed incorrectly, this abnormality will cause magnetic field disruption, induce reverse electromotive force, and may lead to severe vibrations and abnormal noise. During startup, it may easily lead to “stall” phenomena, where the rotor cannot rotate properly due to internal magnetic fields canceling each other out or generating opposite repulsion.

Abnormal Situations of Electric Motor Magnets: Incorrect Magnet Installation

Permanent magnet synchronous motors are more likely to experience desynchronization between the stator and rotor magnetic fields. Long-term operation may also cause the loosening or breaking of mechanical components, abnormal noise frequencies, and sharp electromagnetic noise.

Magnetic Performance

Weak magnets refer to the condition where the remanence (Br) or coercivity (Hc) of the magnetic steel falls below design standards, or material aging, high-temperature demagnetization, or manufacturing defects cause them to meet the standards but still perform weakly. If the magnet’s strength diminishes, the motor’s output torque will decrease, leading to poor performance under load. Moreover, weak magnets can increase the motor’s thermal load, potentially causing overheating and further affecting the motor’s stability and lifespan.

Treatment of Abnormal Situations of Electric Motor Magnets

From the above analysis, it is evident that the installation accuracy and performance stability of magnets are crucial to the motor’s functionality; any abnormalities may lead to serious functional failures or safety hazards and must be strictly controlled during manufacturing and use.

Treatment of Abnormal Situations of Electric Motor Magnets: Real-Time Monitoring

| Real-Time Monitoring: The status of the magnetic steel can be monitored by measuring the operating waveform of the motor. If the waveform is abnormal, it may indicate an issue with the magnets. Qualified measurement and control equipment can monitor magnetic waveforms in real-time, reducing performance degradation and faults caused by magnetic field issues.

| Prevention Measures: During the design and manufacturing process of the motor, ensure that the fitting surface between the magnetic steel and the fixed surface is consistent and use adhesives for reinforced fixing. Additionally, avoid prolonged operation of the motor in high-temperature environments to prevent magnets from losing their magnetism. Alternatively, implement overall magnetization, where all permanent magnets within the motor are magnetized at once.
