Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) has been widely used in sports equipment manufacturing for many years. It finds applications in various sports equipment such as tennis rackets, badminton rackets, rowing boats, sailing boats, and skis.
Principles of Using CFRP in Sports Equipment
| Carbon Fiber: CFRP is a composite material with a polymer matrix reinforced by carbon fibers. It offers excellent comprehensive performance. In sports equipment manufacturing, the choice of molding process depends on the shape and performance characteristics of the equipment, which can further enhance its performance. The application of CFRP varies across different sports, and the performance of the raw material can be tailored by adjusting the ratio of carbon fiber to polymer and the alignment of the carbon fibers to meet the specific needs of various sports equipment.
| Polymer: The choice of polymer in CFRP used for sports equipment also has specific requirements. For example, ice skate wheels require high wear resistance and hardness, making rigid polyurethane plastic the best choice; for golf clubs, which require wear resistance, unsaturated polyester can be chosen; for bows and arrows that require high toughness and strength, epoxy resin is the preferred choice.

Different Production Methods of CFRP in Sports Equipment
CFRP sports equipment is made by combining carbon fiber with a polymer. Different methods can be used depending on the shape and performance characteristics of the sports equipment. This not only helps improve athletes’ training outcomes but also significantly increases production efficiency and reduces costs.
| Methods | Sports Equipment |
| Filament Winding | Golf Clubs, Fishing Rods, etc. |
| Compression Molding | Skis, Rowing Oars, etc. |
| RTM | Bicycles, Kayaks, etc. |
| Pultrusion | Bows and Arrows, Ski Poles, etc. |
Filament Winding
This process involves impregnating carbon fibers with a polymer and winding them around a mold, then curing them to form the desired shape. The direction of the carbon fibers and the winding method can be selected based on the load direction of the sports equipment. This simple and easy-to-operate process is suitable for producing sports equipment of specific shapes.
Compression Molding
In this method, carbon fibers and the polymer are placed in a mold, heated to melt the polymer, and then subjected to pressure to cool and solidify. This process is suitable for mass production, offering ease of automation.
Resin Transfer Molding (RTM)
This method involves pre-forming carbon fiber fabric into a specific shape in a mold, then injecting the molten polymer, cooling it, and solidifying it. This method has low environmental pollution and a simple forming process.
Pultrusion
This process involves applying tension to carbon fibers or carbon fiber fabrics, impregnating them with a molten polymer matrix, and then extruding and heating them to cure the product. The product’s performance can be adjusted by controlling the amount of the polymer used.
Applications of CFRP in Sports Equipment
Racket-Type Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) Sports Equipment

Racket-type sports equipment primarily includes items such as tennis rackets and badminton rackets. Structurally, a racket consists of two main parts: the racket head and the handle. The racket head is used to strike the ball during play, controlling its trajectory, and thus requires the racket to have good flexibility, impact resistance, and shock absorption. The handle, which is the part held by the player, needs to have a certain level of friction to prevent slipping due to sweat.
When the ball makes contact with the racket head during play, vibrations occur. Reducing the amplitude of these vibrations helps the athlete better judge the ball’s movement, select the appropriate angle and force, and strike the ball more accurately. Rackets made from CFRP offer excellent shock absorption, enhancing the racket’s stability. This effective vibration damping also reduces vibrations in the handle, minimizing discomfort for the player.
For example, a tennis racket made from carbon fiber-reinforced polymer using a filament winding process combined with specific weaving techniques results in a racket head with a striking area that is more than 1.5 times larger than that of traditional wooden rackets. Additionally, the elasticity of the racket is significantly improved, which can substantially increase the initial speed of the tennis ball.
Poles/Rods-Type Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) Sports Equipment

Rod and stick sports equipment mainly includes poles, fishing rods, and golf clubs. These types of sports equipment require materials with excellent elasticity. Poles need to withstand the weight of the athlete and quickly rebound, propelling the athlete to a higher altitude. Traditional poles were made of natural wood, which is heavy and lacks elasticity, resulting in a best pole vault record of only 3.3 meters at that time.
In contrast, poles made from CFRP using the filament winding process have ultra-high elasticity, maximizing the conversion of the athlete’s kinetic energy from the run-up into elastic deformation energy and then into gravitational potential energy, significantly improving performance. The current pole vault world record of 6.16 meters is closely linked to the material of the pole.
Fishing rods require lightweight materials with high tensile strength, as well as being non-conductive during use. CFRP rods, manufactured using the injection molding process, offer the advantages of being lightweight and durable.
Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer golf clubs, produced using the filament winding process, possess characteristics of high strength, high elasticity, and high damping, which can extend the contact time with the ball and increase the hitting distance.
Board-Type Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) Sports Equipment
Board-type sports equipment mainly includes items such as table tennis paddles, skis, surfboards, and sailboards. For skis, they must support the athlete’s weight and have sufficient strength. Additionally, during use, they undergo turns and vibrations, necessitating excellent stability and shock absorption.
Skis made from a three-dimensional sandwich structure combining carbon fiber-reinforced polymer with aramid-carbon fiber hybrid materials offer advantages such as good stability and high wear resistance, making it easier for athletes to perform during competitions.
Sailing and surfing are water sports, where athletes need to continuously increase their speed during training to achieve better competition results. Therefore, sailboards and surfboards must be lightweight and resistant to corrosion. Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer, with its low density and corrosion resistance, is well-suited for manufacturing high-performance sailboards and surfboards.
Other Equipment
CFRP is also extensively used in other sports equipment such as bicycles and climbing ropes. Bicycles made from CFRP have improved rigidity and shock absorption, while climbing ropes made from CFRP offer enhanced strength and wear resistance, significantly increasing safety during sports like climbing.
CFRP is a remarkable composite material, combining the features of two different materials and offering properties neither material alone can provide. Its application in sports equipment has effectively enhanced the performance of these products, contributing to better athletic achievements and improved safety.
